I came across one of these a few months back. This girl thought it was so interesting that she was a former drug addict who had an affair with a college professor or something like that. If you want to help people with your experience, become a psychologist. Writing a book about it is tacky and screams “Look at me. I’m special because I’m a f*** up.”

This is bad, but at least s/he offers a cut of the book “profits.” I can’t believe all the ads that basically want you to write a book for a few measly bucks. Does anyone do that? If I know enough about a topic to write a book, I want my name on it. Or a percentage of royalties.

As someone who has read many autobiographies that people had self-published or published through sites like iUniverse or PublishAmerica, I guarantee that your amazing life story rarely sells well to outsiders.

I’ve read a few autobiographies that did impact me, “A Child Called It” is one of them. I’ll never forget the horror that poor guy faced. I read a very clever one a few years back, written in comic book format by a breast cancer survivor. She passed away a year ago and that broke my heart.

I’ve also read many autobiographies that would never appeal to a wide audience. In one, the woman spent months getting a diagnosis from doctors. The entire book was her venting about how crappy the medical world is. While true, her complaints wore me out after a couple chapters. When I gave the book my honest review, she was furious that I hadn’t found it as thrilling as her family members and friends.
