			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This week&#8217;s Monday Markets include a magazine for Canadian aviation enthusiasts, one that speaks to women between the ages of 40-59, and one that is all about the environment. I am always surprised by the variety of publications that are on the market. It seems like just about any niche you can think of has a magazine devoted to it.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.canadianaviatormagazine.com/content/view/38/122/">Canadian Aviator</a></p>
<p>From the Web Site:</p>
<blockquote><p>We buy features and contributions to our departments. Rates vary with the amount of revision required per manuscript, and whether or not the photography is strong enough to justify a color spread. Features run up to 2,000 words and include color photos. Departments run 800 to 1,000 words.</p>
<p>Sometimes we will buy longer pieces and break them into two or three episodes, but usually longer pieces are commissioned because, in our opinion, the idea deserves a longer discussion than we can provide in a single issue. Usually, whatever can be said in 10,000 words can be improved by cutting it to 2,500 words. Often, what’s been written in 2,500 words will work in 1,500, and in the hands of a good writer can be told in 500 or less.</p>
<p>We do not pay by the word because it just encourages longer pieces. Write tight, write short, write with the reader in mind, write to inform, write to entertain. We also buy short (50 to 250-word) current news items (current events, ATAC and other aviation event updates, trade news, people news, contests, banquets, fly-ins and festivities).</p></blockquote>
<p><a href="http://www.more.ca/writers_guidelines.php"><span id="more-313"></span>More Magazine</a></p>
<blockquote><p>In 2007, More will publish six issues (Spring, Summer, September, October, November and December). More is wholly owned by Transcontinental Media.</p>
<p>More runs features and departments of varying lengths, with a balance between the practical and the philosophical, the light-hearted and the investigative. All articles should speak to Canadian women between the ages of 40 and 59.</p>
<p>The editors want to hear your individual voice. More doesn&#8217;t have one voice, but rather a chorus of distinctive voices. More readers are their own experts; consequently we run very few how-to articles.</p>
<p>Word length and fees vary depending on the length and complexity of the story &#8211; usually between 1,000 and 2,500 words. Our editorial lead time is four to six months.</p>
<p>Regular departments available to freelancers</p>
<ul>
<li>More Now: Our upfront section, which includes celebrity news and small newsy items</li>
<li>Work, Money, Attitude, Relationships</li>
<li>Despite their specific and diverse topic areas, the shared quality in the above departments is their voice. The majority of stories in these departments are based on personal stories. Revealing individual stories are always going to be our hallmark.</li>
<li>Second Acts</li>
<li>The articles in this department focus on women who have reinvented themselves after the age of 40. Could be first-person or profile.</li>
<li>More Over</li>
<li>More&#8217;s humour page. The lighter side of aging. (Max: 600 words)</li>
<li>Memoir</li>
<li>Evocative first-person essays</li>
<li>Body and Mind</li>
<li>More&#8217;s health department. Stories focus on issues of mental and physical health for midlife women. Includes fitness.</li>
<li>Travel: Stories are destination-based, yet not exclusively. In addition to describing destinations of interest, More&#8217;s travel pieces are layered with personal stories and fascinating profiles.</li>
<li>Food: Food articles can be associated with a destination, a specific artisan or nutrition.</li>
</ul>
</blockquote>
<p>Pays within 30 days after acceptance.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.emagazine.com/view/?1512">E Magazine</a></p>
<blockquote><p>As the largest independent environmental magazine, with a circulation of 50,000, E serves an important role as the voice for the environmental movement and as a vital information source on national and international coverage of environmental issues. Founded in 1990, E is sponsored by Earth Action Network, a nonprofit organization located in Norwalk, Connecticut. In an attempt to stay consistent with our values and goals, we print our magazine on recycled paper and screen our advertisers carefully.</p>
<p>E seeks submissions for the following sections, with word lengths as indicated. Please examine back issues of E to get an idea of the style, tone and content of articles we publish.</p>
<p>Features<br />
In-depth articles on key national and international environmental issues. e.g., population, transportation, children&#8217;s environmental health, biotechnology, environmental education and energy. 3,200 to 4,200 words.</p>
<p>Currents<br />
News articles. i.e., environmental racism, cloning controversies, Maine forests for sale, cactus poachers, profiles of key organizations/campaigns. 1,000 words; five per issue.</p>

creation of a green home. e.g., eco-paints, home energy-saving tips, organic cotton bedding. 750 words.</p>

<p>Eating Right<br />
Discusses the environmental implications of food choices. e.g., organic cereals, sustainable seafood. 1,000 words.</p>
<p>Tools for Green Living<br />
Brief introductions/reviews of new green products and services. e.g., Nature&#8217;s Way Feline Pine cat litter and eco-friendly shoes. 100 words; unpaid. The Books section profiles new publications. e.g., Earth Odyssey. 100 words; may be unpaid.</p></blockquote>
<p>Pays $0.30 per word.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This week&#8217;s Monday Markets feature a magazine for diving enthusiasts, people interested in the sport of fly fishing, and one that focuses on folklore in Saskatchewan. I wasn&#8217;t specifically looking for three Canadian magazines this week; it just happened to work out that these happen to be Canadian publications. </p>
<p><span id="more-296"></span><a title="Diver Magazine" href="http://www.divermag.com/docs/guidelines.html">Diver Magazine</a></p>
<p>From the Web Site:</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>Subject Preferences:</strong> Well written and illustrated Canadian and North American regional dive destination articles. Most travel articles are committed up to a year in advance and there is limited scope for new material. No payment for travel feature-but will give extended complimentary subscription.</p>
<p><strong>Submission:</strong> with illustrations should be <a href="mailto:mail@divermag.com">e-mailed</a> or on CD-PC or Mac in MS Word, with a hard copy. Must be concise and clear; other materials enclosed should be marked for easy identification and reference. Only complete articles as described with illustrations will be considered. Package only one completed article per submission to Diver Magazine, 241 East 1st Street, North Vancouver, BC V7L 1B4.</p>
<p><strong>Length:</strong> Between 500 and 1000 words. Well illustrated, shorter pieces are preferred.</p></blockquote>
<p>Pays $2.50 per column inch, $15 for photos.</p>
<p><a title="The Canadian Fly Fisher Magazine" href="http://www.canflyfish.com/2007/writersguidelines.asp">The Canadian Fly Fisher Magazine</a></p>
<p>From the Web Site:</p>
<blockquote><p><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;"><strong>1. </strong>The focus of writing will be distinctly Canadian. This does not necessarily mean that the author or the location being written about have to be Canadian: what is important is that there is a clear and uncontrived Canadian connection.</span></p>
<p><strong>2. </strong>Writing should generate a strong sense of place and experience.</p>
<p><strong>3. </strong>The text should be information-rich and aimed at the average to above average fly fisher, except for &#8220;The Absolute Beginner&#8221;.</p>
<p><strong>4. </strong>Local and regional information on fishing and tying should, wherever possible, be extended to regions and situations beyond the place of the article&#8217;s origin.</p>
<p><strong>5. </strong>Advertorial should be avoided, although references to brand-name equipment and specific lodges or guides, etc. can be used where they are appropriately integral to the text.</p>
<p><strong>6. </strong>Where possible and appropriate, diagrams and sketches should be provided to illustrate technique. Artistic merit is not a factor here, as we have our own graphic artists who can work from rough sketches.</p>
<p><strong>7. </strong>Maps should be provided wherever appropriate. Commercially produced maps with key features highlighted are particularly useful. We will use these to customize maps for the article.</p>
<p><strong>8.</strong> First-time writers must include a bio of 50-70                    words.</p>
<p><strong>9.</strong> Features range from 1800-2500 words. &#8220;Wandering Aengus&#8221; and similar shorter pieces range from 700-900 words. Occasionally, we use very short fillers.</p></blockquote>
<p>Pays $150-$300 for major pieces and $100-$200 for shorter ones, within 60 days of publication.</p>
<p><a title="Folklore Magazine" href="http://www.shfs.ca/folklore_writersguide.php">Folklore Magazine</a></p>
<p>From the Web Site:</p>
<blockquote>
<blockquote><p>In keeping with SHFS&#8217;s mandate to gather, preserve and share the history and folklore of the area now known as Saskatchewan, every submission must be original and have Saskatchewan historical content. In each issue, we prefer a balance covering these three categories:</p>
<p class="contentTitle">Folklore:</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;All people are &#8216;Folk&#8217; and thus all people have &#8216;Folklore.&#8217;&#8221; (Michael Taft, folklorist, Discovering Saskatchewan Folklore).</p>
<ul>
<li>Stories of people, events, beliefs, rituals, legends, tales, songs, music, dances, medicine, etc.</li>
<li>Stories of First Nations people, especially by First Nations authors.</li>
<li>Stories of the Métis, especially by Métis authors.</li>
<li>Stories of pre-settlement days, e.g. early ranching.</li>
<li>Stories of cultural roots transplanted from countries of origin and/or the other provinces of Canada to Saskatchewan. The point of view for such stories still needs to be Saskatchewan. The stories should not be about the life in the &#8220;old country&#8221;, rather how this life or culture affected life in Saskatchewan.</li>
</ul>
</blockquote>
<p class="contentTitle">History:</p>
<blockquote>
<ul>
<li>History seeks to establish facts.</li>
<li>Factual accounts, researched and verified by bibliography:</li>
<li>First Nations habitation of the land, Metis hunters, early explorations, etc.</li>
<li>Early ranching, settlement on homesteads, the development of villages, towns and cities.</li>
<li>Biographies.</li>
<li>Historical non-fiction.</li>
</ul>
</blockquote>
<p class="contentTitle">Poetry:</p>
<blockquote>
<ul>
<li>Folkloric or historical.</li>
</ul>
</blockquote>
</blockquote>
<hr noshade="noshade" /></blockquote>
<p>Pays $1.50 per printed column-inch of text and &#8220;complementary visual support.&#8221; Buys First North American or Canadian Serial Rights. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This week&#8217;s edition of Monday Markets includes an in-flight magazine for a regional airline and a mag that focuses on families. The third item is an example of a community newsletter that publishes submissions from freelance writers.</p>
<p><a title="Horizon Air Magazine" href="http://www.horizonairmagazine.com/contributor/writers.php">Horizon Air Magazine</a></p>
<p>From the Web Site:</p>
<blockquote><p><em>Horizon Air Magazine</em> is the monthly in-flight magazine for Horizon Air, reaching more than 584,000 travelers in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, California and Western Canada each month. Our target audience is business travelers, the majority of whom are between the ages of 35 and 54. To serve those travelers, we&#8217;ve positioned <em>Horizon Air Magazine</em> as a regional business and travel publication, covering the companies, people, issues and trends that define the Northwest as a community and as a world player. We strive to produce an informative and entertaining magazine with superior writing and striking photography.</p>
<p>We look for writing with vivid images, anecdotes and a strong narrative flow. We are always looking for writers of national magazine caliber, who can cover business and travel with style and insight. <em>Horizon Air Magazine</em> is 80 percent freelance written.</p>
<p>The best way for writers to get started with us is to send clips of published work (photo copies are fine) and a well-written query, including a sample lead that represents the direction, tone and style proposed for the story. The query should demonstrate advance research and original thought on the part of the writer.</p></blockquote>
<p>Rates start at $100 for news articles and short pieces. Features are paid at $450 for 2,000-2,500 words. Pays on publication.</p>
<p><a title="Metro Family" href="http://www.metrofamilymagazine.com/writers-guidelines"><span id="more-285"></span>Metro Family</a></p>
<p>From the Web Site:</p>
<blockquote><p>MetroFamily Magazine is dedicated to informing parents and empowering families. The goal of our features, departments, and columns is to educate, inspire, and uplift readers.</p>
<p><strong>About Submitting</strong><br />
E-mail submissions are preferred. Send to Editor@MetroFamilyMagazine.com. We purchase one-time print rights and web rights. We work 2-3 months in advance so plan feature queries/submissions accordingly.<br />
<strong><br />
About Formatting</strong><br />
• Send articles in the body of your e-mail. If the article is chosen for publication, I may ask if it is available as a Word document.<br />
• In a series of three or more terms and a single conjunction, use a comma after each term except the last. Example: Sarah doesn’t own a pig, a rat, or a bird.<br />
• Please, only one space following a period.<br />

<p><strong>About Writing</strong><br />
<strong>Leads:</strong> An interesting, compelling lead into each story is critical. Just like us, our readers have work to do, meals to prepare, and kids to tend. We must seduce them into reading.<br />
<strong>Humor:</strong> Bring it on! If you can lighten a “heavy” story with some appropriate levity, by all means do so.<br />
<strong>Surprises:</strong> Try to put one in every piece you write. Startle readers with an unexpected statistic or raise eyebrows with a surprising outcome.<br />
<strong>Length:</strong> Keep it short. Our features rarely run over 1,000 words, including sidebars.<br />
<strong>Layering:</strong> Many people don’t read, they flip. Each story needs to be layered so that even someone scanning the page can take away an important fact or idea. Include suggested pullout quotes, subheads, bulleted items, and/or sidebars.<br />
<strong>Art:</strong> Photographs grab readers’ attention, so we want to include them whenever possible. If you have photos or leads for photos, please pass that information along as early in the writing process as possible.</p></blockquote>
<p>Pays $25 for up to 400 words; $35-$50 for up to 900 words, on publication.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In this week&#8217;s edition of Monday Markets, I have three examples of very specific niche publications. One is for stamp enthusiasts, the second one is a parenting magazine for Kansas City area residents. The third one on today&#8217;s list publishes stories of interest to people living in Washington, D.C.</p>
<p><a title="Linn's Stamp News" href="http://www.linns.com/aboutus/writerguide/writers_guidelines.aspx"><span id="more-271"></span>Linn&#8217;s Stamp News</a></p>
<blockquote><p>The goal of <em>Linn&#8217;s Stamp News</em> is to create a weekly publication that is indispensable to stamp collectors. Everything we do, from the broadest editorial policy to the most trivial stylistic idiosyncrasy, is thought out in the light of this one overriding goal.<br />
We try to achieve indispensability in various ways:<br />
Every collector, from the beginner to the most sophisticated, wants to know the news. Our aim is to provide all the news, as conveniently and as accessibly as we can. In this regard, we feel we are the <em>New York Times</em> of philately.<br />
In stamp collecting, the news is not just club and show announcements, new issues and auction realizations.<br />
New discoveries are constantly being made, sometimes involving material that is decades or even centuries old. We cover this news too, relying on the worldwide network of columnists and correspondents who contribute to our pages.<br />
Of course, we rely on these contributors for much more than hard news. Many of the feature items in <em>Linn&#8217;s,</em> which make up the bulk of our editorial content, originate with free-lance contributors in the collector community.<br />
Here <em>Linn&#8217;s</em> performs an important educational function, by bringing to the attention of approximately 65,000 subscribers (and hundreds of thousands of readers) a diverse selection of facts, thoughts and observations about stamps, postal markings, covers and stamp-related subjects.<br />
Writing in <em>Linn&#8217;s,</em> the free-lance contributor has the opportunity to share his specialized knowledge with the largest stamp collector audience of any periodical in the world.</p></blockquote>
<p>Linn&#8217;s Stamp News buys &#8220;first worldwide periodical rights plus a non-exclusive right to anthologize or otherwise reuse on a proportionate royalty basis&#8221;. Pays $40-$75 per feature.</p>
<p><a title="Kansas City Parent" href="http://www.kcparent.com/index.php?Itemid=33&amp;id=18&amp;option=com_content&amp;task=view">Kansas City Parent</a></p>
<blockquote><p>Kansas City Parent Magazine and Kansas City Baby Magazine enjoy receiving submissions from freelance writers. Each month we have feature articles which relate to our monthly themes (see our editorial calendar below), however we do accept articles on other topics as well. In addition, we run monthly columns including Teacher Talk, Healthy Kids, A Word from Dad, Media Review, Women’s Health, and more. Please pick up a recent copy of our magazines to see an up-to-date department list.</p>
<p>We prefer articles and essays with local relevancy or a local quote. We are usually looking for articles to match our monthly themes 2-3 months prior. Articles should be submitted via e-mail preferably as a Microsoft Word document with a word count of 300 to 1,100 words. Include the word count with the article. Please remember that we receive many more submissions than we can use. We may not be able to respond personally to every query. If the editor wants to review your submission more thoroughly, she will contact you directly. We pay usually pay $25 for each article. Submit articles to: <script type="text/javascript"><!--
&lt;!
var prefix = '&amp;#109;a' + 'i&amp;#108;' + '&amp;#116;o';
var path = 'hr' + 'ef' + '=';
var addy28711 = 'Ed&amp;#105;t&amp;#111;r' + '&amp;#64;';
addy28711 = addy28711 + 'KCP&amp;#97;r&amp;#101;nt' + '&amp;#46;' + 'c&amp;#111;m';
document.write( '&lt;a ' + path + '\'' + prefix + ':' + addy28711 + '\'&gt;' );
document.write( addy28711 );
document.write( '&lt;\/a&gt;' );
// &gt;
// --></script><a href="mailto:Editor@KCParent.com">Editor@KCParent.com.</a></p></blockquote>
<p><a title="The Washingtonian Magazine" href="http://www.washingtonian.com/guidelines.html">The Washingtonian Magazine</a></p>
<blockquote>
<p class="fs5">The Washingtonian is a city magazine-it focuses almost exclusively on the Washington metropolitan area. The magazine was started in October 1965, and its ABC circulation is over 150,000, including 50,000 copies sold each month on area newsstands.</p>
<p class="fs5">Our readers are concentrated in the District, in Montgomery and Prince George&#8217;s counties in Maryland, in Arlington and Fairfax counties and the city of Alexandria in Virginia, and in Loudoun and other counties surrounding the metropolitan area. About 75 percent of our readers live in the Maryland and Virginia suburbs, 15 percent in the District, and 10 percent outside the metro area.</p>
<p class="fs5">We are very open-minded-as long as the article idea is interesting and relates to the Washington area.</p>
<p class="fs5">If you have not worked with us before, send us a query about your article idea via mail or e-mail us at <span style="text-decoration: underline;">editorial@washingtonian.com</span>. Tell us who you are and what kind of article you&#8217;d like to write. If your article is already written, mail or e-mail it or drop it off. If you want a manuscript returned, include a stamped, self-addressed envelope. Give us at least two weeks to respond to a query or submission.</p>
<p class="fs5">The types of articles we publish include service pieces (weekend getaways, great places to live, wedding guides); profiles of people (Dan Snyder, Barack Obama); investigative articles (&#8221;Why Is Lead Still Poisoning Our Children?&#8221;); rating pieces (Bush&#8217;s Cabinet, top home-repair services); institutional profiles (&#8221;How the Carlyle Group Is Making Billions,&#8221; &#8220;Cracking DC&#8217;s Masonic Code&#8221;); first-person articles (&#8221;Confessions of a Car Salesman,&#8221; &#8220;My Son, the Mormon&#8221;); stories that cut across the grain of conventional thinking (&#8221;First, Kill All the Lawyers&#8221;); articles that tell the reader how Washington got to be the way it is; light or satirical pieces (send the completed article, not the idea, because in this case execution is everything); and fiction that tells readers how a part of Washington works or reveals something about the character or mood or people of Washington.</p>
<p class="fs5">Subjects of articles include federal and local government, business, sports, education, medicine, fashion, the environment, how to make money, how to spend money, real estate, performing arts, visual arts, dining out, travel, health, nightlife, home and garden, self-improvement, places to go, and things to do. Again, we are interested in almost anything as long as it relates to the Washington area.</p>
<p class="fs5">We don&#8217;t like puff stories or what we call &#8220;isn&#8217;t it interesting&#8221; pieces. There should be an idea behind the story. We don&#8217;t run articles on people, places, or businesses just because they&#8217;re there.</p>
<p class="fs5">In general, we try to help our readers understand Washington better, to help our readers live better, and to make Washington a better place to live.</p>
</blockquote>
<p class="fs5">Pays $0.75 per word on publication.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This week&#8217;s Monday Markets includes a magazine for women who are leading double lives, a reptile mag, and one that prefers to publish submissions from Canadian writers.</p>
<p><a title="Hybrid Mom" href="http://www.hybridmom.com/writers-guidelines.html">Hybrid Mom</a></p>
<p>From the Web Site:</p>
<blockquote><p>Readers of <em>HybridMom.com</em> and Hybrid Mom magazine are women who are leading double lives…and loving it. Blending a commitment to at-home parenting with other demanding roles means that their days are crazy; they crave a support group that is there when they have time for it, to make them laugh and feel good about the path they have chosen.</p>
<p><span id="more-247"></span>These women are no longer choosing between a successful career or a successful family life, but rather integrating their many aspirations for the purpose of achieving a balanced life. Hybrid Mom’s editorial content reflects a voice of friendship, rather than an expert and focuses on the &#8220;real world&#8221; of this new generation of Moms. Hybrid Mom provides insight and intelligence, practical tools and strategies to guide today&#8217;s Moms in their quest to work, play and live without sacrificing their families.</p>
<p>We share secrets, stories, photos and wisdom gleaned from experience, but we don’t tell readers how to be a better mother, housewife and person. We celebrate and commiserate rather than lecture. Our readers are more than mothers. They are wives and daughters and human beings with brains and dreams and a yearning for a community that fits all of their identities.</p>
<p>Our readers are educated, determined and at times, frustrated. They are also very busy, so get to the point fast. Entertain them with stories about people like them. Educate them with information they need in the easiest-to-digest format possible. Most important, have fun. Find new and creative ways to reach the heart and mind of our readers.</p>
<p>This is the next generation of &#8220;reality magazines.&#8221; A good trick is to read the story out loud to a friend before you send it in. If it doesn&#8217;t sound natural, try again. Read the stories on our site. Once you understand where <em>Hybrid Mom&#8217;s</em> readers are coming from, you will understand how to write for them.</p></blockquote>
<p>Pays $150 for columns and $300 for features published in print; Does not pay for articles published online.</p>
<p><a title="Common Ground" href="http://www.commonground.ca/aboutus/writers_guidelines.shtml">Common Ground</a></p>
<p>From the Web Site:</p>
<blockquote><p>Thank you for your interest in submitting an article to Common Ground.</p>
<p class="HTMLBody"><strong>We prefer to receive a query first by email</strong> describing the proposed article, including its title, approximate length, and the most important points it will cover. It&#8217;s an excellent idea to send us the first paragraph to help get us excited about your proposal. Also include a brief biography as well as an explanation of why the author is qualified to write on this subject. <strong>Please do not send any attachments with your query.</strong> Send queries to <a href="mailto:editor@commonground.ca">editor@commonground.ca</a>.</p>
<p class="HTMLBody">Please read past issues of Common Ground to understand the nature and style of the editorial content. The offices of Common Ground have past issues available to you for $5 each. Generally we accept articles on health, wellness, the environment, transformational travel and personal growth. We prefer articles by Canadian authors, and we very rarely accept fiction and poetry. For current needs, please refer to the <a href="http://www.commonground.ca/aboutus/calendar.shtml">Editorial Calendar</a>.</p>
<p class="HTMLBody">Articles of 600 to 1,500 words are accepted. We will consider longer articles, up to 2,500 words, but will probably ask you to edit them to a shorter length once they are accepted, but please <strong>query first</strong>. Most articles are enhanced by a high contrast, compelling photo, line drawing or graphic.</p>
</blockquote>
<p class="HTMLBody">Pays $0.10 per word.</p>
<p class="HTMLBody"><a title="Reptiles Magazine" href="http://www.reptilechannel.com/writers-guidelines.aspx">Reptiles Magazine</a></p>
<p class="HTMLBody">From the Web Site:</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>What is <em>REPTILES</em>? Who reads it? </strong><em>REPTILES</em> is a monthly magazine that caters to reptile and amphibian hobbyists. It covers a wide variety of reptile and amphibian-related topics, including captive care, field herping and herpetocultural trends. <em>REPTILES</em> also has an annual sister publication titled <em>Reptiles USA</em>, which is geared toward beginning herp enthusiasts.</p>
<p><strong>Advice for “reptile people.”</strong> Please query us first via e-mail at <a href="mailto:reptiles@bowtieinc.com">reptiles@bowtieinc.com</a>. Be sure to give us an idea of your herp background. If you have some experience with the animals you wish to write about, or a particular type of setup, that’s the best place to start. Long-term success with keeping reptiles and/or amphibians is great, and a track record of successful breeding is even better. This type of experience is much preferred over an author who simply scans a book or does some brief research on the Internet before churning out an article.</p>
<p><strong>Advice for freelance writers.</strong> Submissions from freelance writers are welcome, though we ask that you query first at the e-mail address listed above.</p>
<p><strong>Articles that interest us:<br />
<em>Husbandry </em></strong>— Husbandry articles about a particular species of herp, or family of herps, should contain a bit of natural history as well as detailed care and husbandry of the animal(s) in captivity. Include info about tank size, food, temperature, tank setup, potential cagemates, temperament, lighting, potential life span, etc.<br />
<strong><em>Breeding</em></strong> — Include information about how and when to brumate, courtship, gestation lengths, nesting, incubation, hatchling care, etc.<br />
<strong><em>Field herping/travel</em></strong> — Articles about domestic and foreign herp-hunting trips should include a sidebar that outlines travel information, such as how to get there; other attractions; where to stay and eat, if applicable; etc.<br />
<strong><em>Interviews</em></strong> — Q&amp;A-style articles with “name” people and personalities in the reptile world.<br />
<strong><em>Latest trends</em></strong> — New developments in the hobby, i.e. new morphs, new husbandry techniques, etc.<br />
<strong><em>How-to’s/tips</em></strong> — Step-by-step how-to’s and specific advice on setups, keeping, lighting, feeding, handling, etc.<br />
<strong><em>Health</em></strong> — Articles about disease are typically assigned to our veterinarian authors, but if you’re a vet with expertise in treating herps, you are welcome to send health-related articles.</p>
<p><strong>All freelance submissions are sent “on spec.” </strong>This means “on speculation,” which translates as, “You send, we read, we either accept or we don’t.” We’re under no obligation to accept your article. Even if you query first and we tell you to go ahead and write the article, the submission will still be on spec. Our telling you to go ahead with your article idea does not guarantee acceptance once we receive it. It may be a while (few weeks to a month… maybe even longer) before you hear back from us. Please be patient. Contacting us once to make sure we received your materials is fine.</p></blockquote>
<p>Pays $500 for a 2,000-2,500 article with photos, on publication.</p>
