Very slim gig list today; I’m guessing we’ll see better stuff next week after the holiday.
Job tip o’ the day: As a blogger PR folks will be contacting you all the time. This is good news in that you can score news tips plus items to review. However, managing your PR contacts can be rough at first. In January I posted a series on PR contact management. If you missed it, brush up with the following…
- How to create a ProfNet opportunity for blog news, products, and tips
- How to build or break relationships with PR contacts
- Managing Your Blog PR Contacts
- What one PR gal really thinks about working with bloggers

How about a good laugh?
6 Tips on How To Sell Out As A Blogger - I’m not an all-the-time fan of Tremendous News! but this sell out post almost made me snort coffee out my nose. Not cool when I’m supposed to be working, but fun.
In job related news, there likely won’t be any leads until the 1st because the last two days of the month are crazy for me. Invoices, catch-up, new contracts, and all that jazz. That said, have a good end of the month and see you in July.

One job listing you should not apply for

Today I’m posting a gig that’s annoying right off the bat:
Green blogger – NOW while I’m sure some of you will apply for this gig, I’d rather you didn’t, I’m posting it to show you an obnoxious job. If you’re hired the pay is good per post, but they’re asking for a lot for free. Too much. Here’s what they want you to do…
“To apply, follow these simple 3 steps:
1. Browse our site and see if you connect and resonate with it. Start with the About Us page and check also the other links in the bottom, like the Alternative definitions.
2. Apply for an account here.
3. Upload your sample blog on a topic that is relevant to AltGlobe’s Alternative subjects and categories.
4. E-mail us with the title of you blog to let us know you are interested in becoming a team member.
After your sample blog post is published on the site, we will allow one week to see how our readers react to your writing and how you integrate in the community. We encourage all our bloggers to be active participants by connecting with other members on the site and commenting on other bloggers’ posts, as well as answering questions people had to ask about your own blog post.”
Here’s why this is an obnoxious gig…
- If you’re an actual writer/blogger you likely have a collection of links and past work to share. A new sample is unnecessary. If a client can’t tell how you write from a collection of past posts you’ve done, if they really need a NEW one, in my opinion there’s something wrong with the client. They’re just lazy and don’t want to sort resumes or they’re looking for page views at their site.
- Their “simple 3 steps” to applying are actually a little involved. It could end up taking you up to an hour to do all that; an hour in which you could have been making money elsewhere.
- AFTER you do the three simple steps, you have to hang out doing other stuff – answering comments, making sure you promote that new post, and social networking – all for free. You’re helping them build a community for free. Lame. PLUS it can take longer than a week for a post to get decent traffic or responses, which tells me they expect unrealistic things right off the bat.
- After you do all of the above it’s highly unlikely you’ll be that one blogger to get hired. According to the ad, they’re looking for “A” green blogger. Your odds of getting hired when hundreds of writers have no issues applying for a lame audition gig like this – NOT GOOD.
Why would I post a lame job ad – as an example. If writers and bloggers apply for gigs like this, if we offer up free content and time without batting an eye, potential clients will go right on expecting that they can hold obnoxious job application processes like this.
Do you need to do the above?: Heck no. All my current jobs had no audition process. I’m making enough $ to live on through my blogging gigs, and not one of my clients wanted me to do all this crap above. I sent an email bio, cover letter, and past samples of my work, had an interview, and was hired. 20 mins tops from applying to job. In general, I don’t do lengthy audition processes for gigs and you shouldn’t either. Our time is worth more than this, don’t you think?
Coming up in a little bit, the actual job listings of the day.

A decent group of gigs today, although people might take the time to write better job ads…
And on that note, your job tip’ o the day is: Location specific gigs might be suitable for telecommuters, but if you don’t ask you won’t know. I posted at least 5 gigs today that were super vague about location. These are jobs that could be done remotely, but maybe they want on site. Sometimes, jobs that state a location may not find someone they like and could be willing to take on a telecommuter. In my opinion, it never hurts to contact a location specific gig and see if they’d hire a telecommuter. UNLESS the job states one of the following:
- Must be able to attend meetings.
- Must supervise/work with the on-site team.
- So and so candidates ONLY!
- Needs to interview local sources in person.
When gigs state the above, it’s a good bet they’re not up for remote writers. But otherwise it never hurts to ask.

Sorry about the lack of gigs posted the last few days. My son was home from school before camp kicked in, and since I work at home, that was less than ideal working conditions. This should be a busy week too, but I’m looking to get at least three job posts up for you all this week. Today’s listings kick ass btw; lots and lots of gigs to browse. Not too many how-to pieces this week here at Blogging for a Living – it’s been crazy busy! Next week we’ll look at a better combo of jobs and tips, but for today, just some gigs. Some pretty good looking jobs today too.
Job tip o’ the day: Use the law of averages to your advantage. When I first started freelancing I was worried about landing work because in the past I had mainly written for companies I already worked for – i.e no job search involved. When I actually had to apply for work, I figured it would take forever to land a piece. However, during my first month of freelancing I sent out something like 60 queries (maybe more) and landed some gigs, including a feature article and a mid-sized feature, both in national glossies.
Maybe I was just lucky, but I like to think that one, by sending out so many apps and queries I increased my odds of landing work considerably, and two, it’s good practice. That first month it seriously took me an hour at first to get a query written out, 60 some odd queries later, I was turning them out like clockwork. The only way to get gigs is to apply, and if you apply a lot, all the better. NOTE: by apply, I do mean for gigs that’s you’re qualified for, and also if you’re sending queries, you still need to think them through, even if you’re chucking out a ton.
Anywhere gigs:
Green blogger – says in NY, but looks like an anywhere gig to me.
Simply Good Media is looking to hire 2 to 3 established bloggers to write articles/posts on the following topics; Home, Mom, Green, Women’s Fashion, Men’s Fashion.
Renewable Energy Technology Correspondent
Online Organizer – Center for Biological Diversity – kind of community management.
Freelance Writer – Harley Davidson Enthusiast
Location specific gigs:
