Freelance writing is a business. Before jumping into any business you need to have three to six months worth of income built up so that you can focus on building your business. In today's market having a strong platform (blogging, guest posting and even facebook) are all parts of creating a successful freelance writing business.

I am beginning to understand that it is worth more to write quality content for myself for free than to write that same content for pennies and not get credit! Thanks for the encouragement to keep on keeping on.

One problem I've run into a lot is that it's easy to stick with what you're making now — as long as you're paying the bills, it can be hard to remember to keep moving forward. Just because a writer is making $20 an hour is no reason not to keep pushing.

I keep upping my personal minimum wage — for me, just paying the bills doesn't feel like enough. I want a healthy retirement fund, the ability to travel and other things that require a healthy cash flow.

@Abby - that's a relevant point. Maybe there's some truth to feeling better about yourself right off the bat. I started in print when I first quit writing for companies to go freelance, and glossies pay a lot, so going from that to web pay was a shock, and I'd look for the highest paying gigs.

I think I lucked out when I started freelancing. I joined Guru and happened to get one of the (somewhat rare) jobs paying $15 USD per 350-word article. Then I got it into my head that I was worth at least that much, so I kept charging other clients that much or more.

If I had gotten a low-paying gig the first time, I might have thought $4 per article was normal and kept going at that rate.
