Jennifer, I’ve known you for a while but…you’ve been peeking at my cover letters and resumes.

Actually, I usually fiddle around with my resume before sending to jobs I really, really want to land. Mine is pretty bare bones- links to my content, mentions of print publishing, and then a rundown of skills like HTML, Photoshop, and various other offline jobs that would mesh well with the writing job I am applying for.

My cover letters? Ask Deb. I sent her one not long ago. They’re scary.

@Cindy – I posted one example in the post – at the bottom. Most of the time you’ll be sending a bio/intro letter not a full on resume, but if you do need to send a full resume, an example wouldn’t hurt. I might pull a fake one together soon and post it.

@Jeanne – yup agreed; I noted this fact in the if you have a nursing degree mention it to a health site example.

Great advice. The only exception I can think of is when applying for writing jobs seeking specific credentials, if your education gives you an edge – mention it. I have an M.S. in Direct and Online Marketing, an MBA level degree in direct mail and internet marketing. There are only two universities that offer this degree, and I have been hired numerous times because of my specialized knowledge. If you have a degree in physics and are trying to land a blogging gig for a science journal, I’d say mention the degree!

An actual example of a good resume would be helpful especially for those of us old enough to have been taught how to write resumes prior to the Web.

@Brad – you should totally mention bobble head collections, but only of the real annoying characters like maybe um, Southpark.
