@Foodeater good luck applying for gigs :)

@Cyn very good point. What doesn't belong is just as important as what does belong - maybe more so. I think as long as people stick to work they're better off. My general rule is to keep personal blurbs to three lines or less, unless the client specifically asks for more. I like the "I'm sure I can fit you in" - too funny.

I've recently had to hire a couple of writers and I can tell you that many, many people need to read this post! Your cover letter is casual, but to the point and I get it -- I get you.

Here are a few things I got that turned me off to hiring a person:

"I've never written anything like you're looking for so I'm sending a memo I wrote for my boss as a sample." (So basically, you're telling me you're not qualified, so why would I hire you?)

"I have many, many clients already, but I'm sure I can fit you in." (Really. Glad you're busy. I wouldn't want to overtax you. Bye.)

"I've been out of work for a year and I have three kids to feed and I'm about to lose my home so I really need this job." (I feel bad for you, but I'm not going to hire you just because you need money. Don't beg, it's unbecoming.)

The real point is, even if all of these things are true, you've never done it, you have a ton of clients and you're about to lose your house - none of those things belong in a cover letter.

I've been considering applying for a freelance blogger job for the first time and asking myself questions about exactly what you have covered here. Very helpful information, thanks so much for sharing it... you've helped give me the confidence to go ahead and apply!
