Freelance Writing Jobs for April 1, 2009: The Better Late than Never Edition

Don’t worry. I didn’t sell the blog this year. My April Fool’s joke today is that there is no April Fool’s joke. Actually, I had some more oral surgery today, sorry so late.

Also, I have had a lot of folks email questions lately and I will be responding. I’ll have a whole blog post dedicated to your mail very soon.

One of the regulars said she preferred leads late in the day because I get more “fresh” leads that aren’t on all the other job lead blogs. Interesting take. I always thought it best to go first thing in the morning:

1. Because I need to do this before I begin my day job (which is why I’m so late sometimes – I have to do this after work or on my lunch hour)

2. Because a lot of the regulars look at leads during their lunch hours

3. I assumed most hunted for work in the morning (like I used to do)

Whats your preference?

Enjoy your leads…

Good luck and have a great night!

I GOT A FULL TIME WRITING JOB!!

April Fool’s! Haha, I wish, but at the moment I only have a few monthly paying gigs, but I’m hoping it will all add up eventually.. till then, I will simply continue to write, go to school, and of course do a bit of hunting for more gigs :)

Hope you’re feeling better after your oral surgery, Deb. And thank you so much for continuing to post jobs for us!

As for when I would prefer the posts, I am one of those who troll for gigs all day, so really, it doesn’t matter to me. I just appreciate that you are taking the time out of your schedule to do some of the trolling for me!

BTW I love, love, love that you tweeted about the job posts being up. Made my day a bit easier to know when to come here and poke around:0)

  3. Jessica says:

Thanks, Deb! I look all day too. If I come here and there’s no list up then I partake in some of the articles, info, and tips. The site is really coming along. :)

I usually don’t find to many gigs that fit my lifestyle. I have a full-time job and can only squeeze stuff in here and there, but the preschool teacher position is PERFECT!

    Thanks again.

  4. I generally only browse for gigs for about 1.5-2 hours, max. I usually get in about 30 minute’s worth first thing in the morning (my morning = middle of the night for U.S. folks), and then I spend an hour or so in the middle of my afternoon, which is early morning for most U.S. folks.

Depends on the month, though. I’ve been swamped for the past week, and I just had a client land a massive project on my desk that will keep me busy about 4 hours a day, 6 days a week, all month long. On top of which I already have contracted work for a couple of other clients. So no time for job searching this month!

Leads in the morning are the best. Gives one the option of pursuing those leads at any time during the day: first-thing in the morning, lunch-time or otherwise.

Also, with much of the leads coming from outside sources, you can bet writers who check those sources are already getting a jump start. And after 100 or so emails to the editors, their eyes gloss over and they probably don’t open their email anymore…

  6. Pat says:

Early morning is best for me as well, but I will echo the sentiments of others that we appreciate the leads whenever you are able to post them. I usually start my day with coffee (not the pretty kind – just straight and black) and a check of various things on the computer, including my bank account to see if I have any money left. Thanks to all the great leads you have provided there is actually still a penny or two there!!!

  7. Pat says:

The lead for Caffeine Addicted Writers is for stories of recovery from addiction. Definitely not my story!!!! :-) Now, time for another cup!!!

    Deb,
It’s very generous of you to ask us when we prefer to have leads, considering that you provide this service to us for free!
For myself – I generally troll in the morning before getting down to client work. But I’m happy to get your leads whenever they come!

    Deb,
I love your website anytime of the day! Keep up the awesome job!

  11. Hi Deb,
First, this site is fabulous! So thank you for providing this service! For me, having fresh leads in the morning is ideal, but anytime is great. My dream for the last 5 years has been to freelance and having just been laid off (and accumulated tons more marketing experience!) I am taking this opportunity to write full time. Needless to say I am combing job boards and query-ing around the clock!

Thanks again for the great community you are creating with your site!

Like most others, I look for work first thing and then get started on my day. Except today. It’s 65 and sunny out there. My hubby took the day off and I’m checking email and going right back outside.

I did want to say that I applied for a job yesterday that I found at Online Writing Jobs, revamping a Web site. They emailed me back saying they needed a writing sample done by rewriting a section of their site. I said I would be willing to do that but I would save any writing to my own Web page for copyright sake and they could view it there. As soon as I said that, they balked and removed the offer. So it seems to me that they were after free content.

  13. Chris says:

I come here in the morning, but my version of the morning is probably later than most folks’. I generally browse between 10 and 11 and that’s mountain time (not sure what time that you post on). I don’t think it’s too big a deal, sometimes I’ll miss a day or two and go back and look through the old posts and apply anyway. Unless it’s one of those–”we need someone for 3000 articles by noon today”, I don’t think you have to apply instantaneously.

  14. Kenna says:

    Thanks for the posts!!!

  15. Jeanie says:

Did anyone else apply for the Copywriter/Assistant to Content Writer in At? They replied so quickly with a test for skills that it makes me pause to think. Any thoughts?

  16. Matt says:

I’m usually coming here by 6:15 or 6:30 am Pacific time. Getting the leads in the AM makes it much easier to get to those craigslist ads before they’re reported and taken down. ;)

  17. I look forward to leads in the morning but anytime is good since you’re the poster who also works on other things too. I agree with Matt’s second sentence. Thanks.

  18. Anne G. says:

    I agree with Matt.

Meanwhile, I heard back from another job offer I applied for a Web site copywriter. This company is based in Malibu and demands an unpaid revision of a page on their Web site that must be at least 1,000 words.

So that’s two duds in a a couple days. This submit a huge sample for free is getting tiring!

  19. becky says:

Doesn’t matter when you post them, but I’m usually checking at night, after everyone’s in bed.
