If I haven’t expressed my gratitude for this community in a while, I apologize. I don’t lie when I tell folks this is the greatest blog community (we’ve even won awards for our community spirit). I especially enjoy watching you all interact and share ideas, tips and experiences – and warnings.
The other day I was on a conference call with a well known web company that may become a huge sponsor for us. While on the call, I was told they love posting ads here because each time they put out a call for writers the writers from this community are always top notch and the cream of the crop. Many of the clients and employers who post jobs at FWJ send back nice notes about the quality of writers coming from the FWJ community. You’re the best. While I draw the line at group hugs, I think a little applause is in order.
Thank you for being her for me and for us.

This site is awesome, I actually was just hired by a local newspaper because of the ad I found on here. I’ve been doing it for a month and I love it. I’ve also had a couple of online gigs pan out from here as well. Thanks again.
Helium is basically writing on spec, only worse. You write an article, and it goes up against articles written by other writers. They pay for the one they like. I don’t know if I get a vote here, but I think this is a lame way for a freelancer to make money.
But let me say again, as I have said in the past–thanks for the great list of gigs. I usually check the same sources you do for prospective gigs, but you always find some that I’ve missed.
I was looking at Helium earlier – is it really that bad? Should I stay clear?
I think Helium is a friendly, fine website for those whose avocation is writing. But I doubt you could make a living writing for them. I posted about 20 short articles on Helium, and last I checked, I had made about $6 total. You earn based on a mysterious algorithm connected to the advertising revenue your articles generate.
Helium Marketplace features buyers who will pay cash for articles, but the way it works is: the buyer posts the topic/title, writers write articles, and the buyer picks and pays for the one article he likes. This is essentially writing on speculation, which I won’t do.
There are probably some really good writers posting articles on Helium, but there are far more mediocre and bad writers there, IMHO.
It’s just my two cents here. There might be others who love Helium and have managed to figure out how to make money there.
