I’m a creature of habit. I rely on my routine as it helps me to stay focused. I start work at the same time every day and generally work until family time begins. Holidays throw me off. I sleep later, work different hours and constantly break my focus to tend to family things. Freelancing affords us flexibility, for sure. Me? I like the freedom of being able to choose working the same hours each day.

Scheduling is very important to my career as a freelance writer. At first, I thought it was a life like Dorothy Parker, the chatting part not the drinking aspect.
Freelance writing takes dedication and discpline to the upmost. One has to deliver work that is worth more than the client expected. Excellent writing leads to even better work and more pay.
That said, if I stick with my schedule I get my work done. Then, I get to do other things that are fun, like play racquetball, spend quality time with my family, self-improvement or go to the movies.
Thanks, Deb, for today’s listings and articles about freelancing. I always find this site encouraging. Here in the new year I’m struggling with keeping to my schedule. Post-holiday slump? Maybe, or maybe I’m just overwhelmed by too many work-related resolutions.
It’s time to make a new one, I think: One day at a time!
Nancy
You’re welcome, Nancy. One day at a time is a perfect philosophy, and as you go along you’ll find the schedule that works for you.
The way I see it, Kenna, is it’s all about rewards. I stick to my schedule and get my work done and the rest is gravy. I reward myself with game night or a good book or a hug from my seven year old. Having a light at the end of the tunnel gives me a goal – and goals always improve focus.
Being able to set my own schedule is critical. Since they dropped bus service to the high school, many parents have struggled to come up with a way to get their child to and from school every day for 7:30am and then home at 2:30. I know many who have their kids wander downtown until they can get there after work (three hours). On exam days like last week, school ended at 11:30, so many kids were stuck wandering from noon until 5:30 – 6pm. After school clubs kill some time, but generally only an hour and there is no teen center in the area.
In addition, I have always been an early morning riser, even on weekends. I’ll work from 5am until the rest of the family is up at 8ish and enjoy that quiet time for getting work done. So I work 4 hours Monday through Friday and then a few hours on Saturday and Sunday and have plenty of time for my kids and household chores.
Anne, I’ve always been a morning person too. Not so early – I did the 4:00 AM rise thing for more years than I care to admit. I’m happy to sleep until 5:30 or 6:00 on weekdays. A luxury compared to my former schedule.
My interaction with time and the way I schedule things definitely needs, shall we say, refinement.
I’d like to be a creature of habit. I tend to become a creature of the night, instead!
Thanks for the link!
If you’re a night person, Carson, it’ll make your 24 hour experiment all the easier. Thanks for stopping by and thanks also for always writing such thought-provoking blog posts.
