I spent a lot of time last night reflecting about past freelance clients and how they treated me and their other writers, some treated us well, and others…not so much. Are there any client that stand out in your mind as going the extra mile for their freelancers? What did they do to make you feel this way?

  1. Hands-down the CEO of TravBuddy. The guy has been absolutely phenomenal to work for. Pay rate is pretty damn good, and he’s always on-time, easy to work with, and shares the same passion for travel that my wife and I have (which is how I got the gig in the first place).

Couple weeks back he was in Japan on a trip and he sent me my bi-weekly payment (I think that’s the correct term…every 2 weeks?) a full 24 hours before I’d even sent in the batch work for the week. Was one of the best surprises I’ve had in a long time. On top of that our e-mails are never just “employer versus employee”. We spent the time to detail past trips, and a few jokes now and again. Honestly…most of the time it feels more like I’m just chatting in an e-mail with a friend, rather than talking with someone writing me a check. Absolute pleasure to work with, and I’m happy for the work he keeps giving me.

Bad ones? Only had one so far that tried to stiff me on cash. I actually had to threaten a Cease and Desist order, and they waited until 4 hours before the deadline to actually reply to my e-mail…then took another 9 days to actually wire the money.

  2. Anne G. says:

I had a guy who owns a local website firm run out of writing work. He felt so bad with the local market slump that he went and personally sent my resume out to other companies and landed me a job that paid the exact same and they’ve kept me extremely busy for the past year.

He didn’t need to do the leg work for me, but I really appreciated it.

  3. Jeanne says:

One of my wonderful clients not only encourages me every time she receives my weekly contributions for her email, but she gave me my own gardening column in one of her publications. She is kind and generous and such a pleasure to write for. My clients truly bless my life, and I hope I bless theirs.

  4. hazel says:

My favorite is a client who asks me every fall, in the process of doing her own business planning for the following year, what MY plans are and how her company fits in. She can’t always give me what I want or need, and I’m not naive – I also know that she’s inquiring about the stability of my business, fishing to find out whether she can count on me to fill her future publication needs. But there’s something about being asked – a measure of concern that really makes me feel good.

  5. Kenna says:

The best client I ever had cared about my writing. He listened and appreciated my hard work without condescending. If I was stuck, he’d help me with as much passion as I had for the piece I was writing. A technical mumbo-jumbo article scrambled many ways without an end until he sat down with me and helped me through to a pleasurable finish. His managing editor was just as kind, helpful and enthusiastic about my writing. One time, I wrote a piece and the company couldn’t use the article, but my client paid me in full anyway!

  6. I am blessed with several great clients who treat me quite well. I find that the one thing that excellent clients have in common is the realization that business is all about relationships, and that building strong relationships with writers is a natural extension of that philosophy.

Mutual respect and commitment to working hard for each other is critical when forging relationships as a freelancer. I think also that part of the reason why I do not have any clients who treat me poorly is because I choose not to do repeat business with anyone who is unpleasant to work with.

    Hi everyone
I’m new to freelance writing. I was motivated to write restaurant reviews which I’ve posted on my blog. I’ve started working for examiner.com but I’m having problems looking for other opportunities. Any advice?

  8. Kristian says:

Hi. I”ve been writing for almost 2 years now. I’m an undergrad of architecture. I’m looking for a writing job that can help me earn income because my sister has congestive heart failure, if there’s anyone who could help me out find a nice client or a team that could accept me. Pls. e-mail me @ caloycastillo_25@yahoo.com.

    Thank you everyone.

  9. Rick says:

    Hi,

I just found your site, and wanted to thank you for setting the information up. Although I haven’t secured a new writing gig yet, I am confident that I will in the near-future. The resource will be a great help going forward, and appreciate y’all looking out for us.

    Regards,

    Rick
