Greeting! Jodee is off this morning and I’m returning to my roots. It’s kind of cool seeing the different jobs out there and getting fodder for my Craigslist Ad of the Day. Sorry these aren’t broken down into groups like Jodee does, I did this during the wee hours and listed them as I could.

I want to thank everyone for bearing with us as we make tweaks to our system. I hope you enjoy this network of blogs, it’s been my dream for some time now and you can’t imagine how excited i am to see it pan out. I hope you’ll stop by the other blogs and comment too! Just curious…are you only here for the leads or are you visiting the other blogs and participating in those discussions as well?

And now, since I know you really didn’t come to hear me talk….

Leads…

Hope you have a great weekend!

I still come primarily for the leads, but I lurk on the other blogs as well. Especially when the titles catch my eye. I like the Craigslist Ad of the Day thing, too. I like what you’ve done with the site. I was fiending for info while you were down, because I check the site daily….lol

  2. Lisa says:

Thank you, as always, Deb, for the job listings.

The answer to your question: I visit primarily for the job leads and markets. They’ve helped me find several very decent projects over the last several months. Thank you! I rarely read other content on the site.

  3. Tara says:

    Hi Deb,

While I do come here primarily for job leads, I also read the other blogs. I work full time and am also a student in addition to my part-time freelance writing status, so sometimes I don’t have as much time as I’d like to spend reading all of the content. When I see a helpful entry or something that directly applies to me, I always click on it.

I also frequently use the 23 places to find freelance work post. Instead of bookmarking all of them, I have just bookmarked that list.

Thanks for posting job ads and other useful content.

    Tara

  4. Thank you for the list Deb. Have a good day off Jodee.

  5. Ann G. says:

Honestly, right now I’m only visiting for the job leads. It’s all I have time for. The two kittens we adopted a couple weeks ago are finally (knocking on wood) flea free (at least it’s been 8 days since I’ve seen a flea anywhere), but the boys are still very clingy and don’t leave me alone. In fact, one is perched on one shoulder and the other is laying on my arm making it difficult to type.

I am pretty sure at this point that the original owner lied about their ages, and my vet is pretty sure they are about 2 weeks younger than she told me, which makes them at this point just barely 6 weeks now. Too young to treat for fleas, so I had to do a lot of research into kitten-safe flea remedies. But it’s been 8 days now since either had a flea on them and now it seems ear mites are the next issue. Again, they’re too young for medications, so I’m trying alternative treatments again.

Once they’re a little older and I have a little more time, I’ll be sure to check out the rest of the site.

  6. Thanks for today’s list!

I visit a few a times a day: first thing in the morning for the leads, then I check back during breaks in my day for new posts. If a title catches my eye I’ll read it, but I don’t read through all new content.

  7. robertas says:

Ann, completely off topic what have you been using as a safe flea treatment? I dabbed a bit of tea tree oil on my dog’s collar it seemed to work but only for a while.

I swore by Frontline before, but I suspect it induced a seizure in my dog (she is fine now) so I’m curious to hear what you have been using that is effective. And as someone who raised 2 kittens, I know clingy kittens and I have scars to prove it :) All the best to you :)

Sorry Deb for hijacking the thread and to answer your question – I scan the ads myself and then come here to see if I have missed anything. Also if something catches my eye I do have a read. It was a bit confusing at first, but I’m getting used to having a variety of content to go through now.

  8. Good morning. I visit the leads first unless something else catches my attention. I peek at all of the headings and click on what interests me or what new info. or links I can get. So I visit elsewhere on the blog too.

I like the new look as it is easier to find things.

I comment only when I have something to say or can add a bit of what was previously posted.

    Thanks for the leads.

  9. Ann G. says:

@RobertaS – I spoke to my vet to start and he kept saying that there was little I could do because until they are 8 weeks, they can’t use any of the medications. He did say that Frontline is a medication that vets are now steering away from and that he recommends Revolution because it’s had a safe track record. In addition, some of his patients/clients are finding that fleas are building a resistance to Frontline. Eventually, I’ll get Revolution just to be safe.

What he did tell me is to bathe the kittens in Dawn dish soap keeping the soap from their eyes. I did that the night I brought them home. It killed me because they cried and scratched my arms to pieces, but sure enough the fleas that didn’t escape the suds died. The rest headed for the face and ears. I kept them in the tub and used the flea comb and tweezers to get any fleas until I saw nothing remaining. Rinsed them off thoroughly and then wrapped them in a towel and handed one to each kids to take near the woodstove and dry them off. When they were dry, I used the flea comb and removed anything I found. While I was doing that, my husband went through the bathroom with a mixture of Borax and water and scrubbed down everything including the bathtub, floors and the heater/baseboards. Then everything I’d used went into the wash with bleach as a precaution and washed the kittens blanket every day.

Repeated this daily for the next four days. On the fourth day, after the bath and combing, I had nothing. So I stopped the bath and have just combed them for the past 8 days watching for any fleas. So far, so good.

I did read that flea eggs can take two weeks to hatch, so I’m prepared for that. Meanwhile, I quarantined the kittens one day to my daughter’s room and then ran the carpet shampooer over all the carpets down here. Then I switched things and shampooed her bedroom.

And as I’m a little Obsessive-compulsive about fleas, I’ve been vacuuming twice a day everything, including furniture, and under the baseboards. It’s extra work, but I don’t want to end up like my neighbors who ignored the issue figuring they could take care of it when the kitten was old enough. That poor little thing became anemic and died.

  10. Cindy says:

@RobertaS & Ann – while we’re on this subject – tea tree oil shouldn’t be used on smaller animals, especially cats, even if it’s diluted. Ingestion can be toxic if you don’t know the precise amount and many vets simply recommend its use only for larger animals. Sounds like those two kittens have found a really wonderful home – good luck!

    Hi Deborah –

These days I’m pretty obsessed with the leads…but I do also read blog posts on topics I find interesting, such as the recent one on how to increase your hits by labeling your photos.

You can’t blame us for looking for work these days!

  12. Chris says:

The 8 freelance writers wins the award for most information without really saying a thing. Top secret writing? Sounds dangerous. That’s kind of a lot to require of the writer without really offering any details of the subject matter–No thanks.

@Deb–Congrats on the new site, that’s awesome that you followed through with what you really wanted to do. I primarily come for the jobs but always try to check out blogs that are of interest. I think the information is invaluable, particularly for newer writers. Of course, if I’m running behind it’s just the facts mam.

  13. robertas says:

Ann thanks :) I did the same with kittens because they were to small for medication. They have anti-flea collars now and I change them according to instructions we haven’t had a problem yet.

I was thinking the same thing about Frontline, because the damn fleas seem to be resistant to it. I’ll just wash and clean my dog and scrub everything, but I will have to see about Revolution, she goes out about 3 times a day, so I have to protect her with something.

But thanks again for all the info :)

  14. Henry says:

Love your site for job leads but your new layout doesn’t make a lot of sense. Why not just have more categories on the sidebar and up top? Otherwise too complicated, methinks.

  15. Kathy says:

I come for the leads but, as a beginning writer, I also come for the information and to hopefully get some questions answered. I’ve posted some questions that haven’t been answered unfortunately – I’m guessing maybe because people don’t know the answer or is it just that I am new here?????

  16. Ann G. says:

@RobertaS – you’re welcome. If anyone has a non-medicine cure for ear mites, they’ve been driving one of my kittens crazy. The other doesn’t seem as bothered but I know they are in there.

  17. Chris says:

Yes, I come for the job leads–I’ve landed 2 well-paying gigs from this site so far–but I often linger for the ancillary articles & tips, as well as the discussions.

I guess that’s the intent, huh? Well done, and thanks!

  18. Cynthia says:

I used to read the Network blog and occastionally read through other blog topics that caught my eye, but frankly, this new format is killing me. I can’t tell what’s new and what’s not. With the topics small (my eyes can barely read that font) and the blog titles big – nothing is grabbing me without a hard look and I rarely have time for that.

I like the network idea, just needs a few more tweaks I think.

  19. Dani says:

    Because you asked:

The old format took less time for me to find what I wanted, and I was more likely to catch additional job gig ads and read other post because the blurbs were all on the front page.

Now, with no blurbs, I just hunt out the job list each morning and leave. I don’t have time to sift through, click, and read all the links on the front page in the hopes I find something I am interested in.

I really appreciate all you do here. There are probably some great posts being made, but like some others have said, I will probably only be here for the leads now. And that’s ok – you still have my traffic coming here, you still have me recommending this site for job leads, and you still have my support. But if you want more – more time here and more reading of the other posts, I think the presentation needs a little more tweaking.

Otherwise, all is well in the world. *smile*

  20. Deb says:

Thanks to everyone for your feedback.

@ Cynthia – the main page http://freelancewritinggigs.com list all the blogs. Under each blog’s link are the most current three posts – so you can at lease click on the most recent posts if you want to have a look around. I’ll work on the font though.

@Kathy – I do try and respond to all who have a question, I’m sorry if I missed yours. Now with six different blogs, we’re more focused to each blog’s comments and your questions won’t get lost in the mix.

@Carol – Of course I don’t blame you for looking for work. I know most people visit for the leads and it’s why I started FWJ in the first place. So of course I know why everyone comes. It is disappointing to receive so much negative feedback right off the bat though, which is why I’m asking. You see, I used to receive so many complaints from the original blog that it was too busy. Now I’ve made it less busy, but it’s too confusing. I don’t know. Maybe I should stop trying?

@Henry – The extra categories made the top too cluttered and didn’t work for the blog’s design. Why do you feel a network featuring six separate blogs doesn’t make sense?

Thanks everyone, I appreciate all the feedback.

  21. Jenny B says:

    Hi Deb,
I love the leads but I also enjoy the other blogs. I appreciate all the changes and additions that you’ve been making. Thanks Deb!

  22. Deb says:

Thank you Jenny, I appreciate your kind words.

Hi Dani – Well it’s disappointing to learn you won’t visit the other blogs. Yes we do get your traffic, but only to one specific blog – but that’s ok too. I don’t want to force you to visit any blog you don’t want to. And I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t bummed to find out people only love us for the leads. In time, we hope to build up traffic to the other blogs – which does take time. Thanks so much for your honesty.

  23. Cindy says:

It’s always interesting to see how each of us reacts to change. This site has become my most valuable resource and what a time-saver! Plus, there’s so much to dig into, which makes it an exciting platform for new growth and continued learning. As a career writer who chose to leave the print world, I am always on the prowl for new ways to expand and monetize my skills. Thanks, Deb, Jodee and everyone.

  24. Kenna says:

Thanks Deb. Enjoy your day off Jodee!!!!

  25. Andy Hayes says:

I quite enjoy a lot of the content firstly and then the leads a close second (am I the only one?) I’m in the UK and so a lot of the leads really aren’t worth my while, although Jodee and I have had many a conversation about this.

@ Deb – give it time to settle, say a month, and then see what folk are saying. People don’t change =)

  26. Andy Hayes says:

Sorry, I meant to say people don’t LIKE change.

  27. C David says:

Wile I dig the site and what you do here, the new design is completely counterintuitive and goes against every browsing design rule. The front page is just a mess of different sized fonts, and the sidebar links to ‘hot leads’ from June. Keep in mind that the average browser will spend about 20 seconds on a page looking for something relevant before they hit the back button – and this just doesn’t do it.

This isn’t familiarity talking – it’s years of designing webpages.

The content is still great, but whoever has re-organized things doesn’t really grasp the idea of designing for this purpose.

  28. Krista says:

Where are the leads? I can’t find them. Just joking :) I love the new site.

  29. Lori says:

Deb & Jodee – I have been vising FWJs for a long time now, since I started freelancing 2-3 years ago. I have landed great gigs that were listed here and always have appreciated the effort you both put into your lists and the site. I also really enjoyed the cover letter series you did a while back. I haven’t been freelancing much lately (since baby #3 arrived!), but I like the new format and will certainly be checking out the other sites. I’m always up for learning something new! Thanks Deb & Jodee.

  30. Beth V says:

I’m late to the game in responding to this post as I wasn’t online much yesterday.

To answer your question Deb ~ I, for one, love the new format. To be honest though, I didn’t initially. But after getting used to it, I find it much easier to navigate. I come primarily for the job leads, but I also check several times a day to see what else has been posted. Now, instead of scrolling through each post, I can check the portal and see what’s new, and click anything that catches my eye.

I appreciate all your hard work, Deb, Jodee and everyone!

  31. SaraE says:

@AnnG – I don’t know if you’re still looking for a home remedy to treat your cat’s ear mites, but if you are, try a couple of drops of corn or olive oil. I’ve used it on my cats, and it works pretty well. Rub the outside of his ears afterward, and clean the inside gently with a q-tip after about 24 hours. It won’t kill all the mites, or possibly the next generation that are still safe in their eggs, but it will offer some relief. I hope this helps.

I scrounged up a link that discusses ear mites in cats that you might enjoy: http://www.grandmashomeremedies.com/ear-mites.html

  32. 2ThePoint says:

I come mostly for the leads and then read or skim thru blog posts if I have the time (I haven’t had an internet connection at home for a good while so time is of the essence when I’m at an internet cafe).

I do find the new design slightly confusing but it’s nothing I can’t get used to in time.

take care and thanks for all your hard work over the years.

  33. Ann G. says:

@SaraE – thanks! I’ll definitely try that. I found a site that said mineral oil, but since they are always cleaning each other, I didn’t want to have them ingesting that! Olive oil I wouldn’t mind them eating!
