In case you missed the news on the Freelance Writing Jobs homepage yesterday, FWJ is celebrating its 4th anniverary this month. I am planning a celebration of sorts, but especially wanted to take some time out to thank you all for your support. We’ve had our ups and down for sure, and your support has been amazing. I don’t have to be number one on Google (but thanks to you we are!), as long as I have this wonderful, thriving community I don’t need much else. Happy anniversary, FWJ community, and thank you so much for your undying support.

Coming up: I’m going to be planning a new feature for one of the blogs called “Success Stories” where I interview successful writers and authors. If you have a success story to share and would like to be interviewed for this series, please send your details to wegetletters@gmail.com. Please put “success stories” in the subject line.

Oh and thank you to all who have sent books for me to review! I finally have time in the evenings for reading so expect your book reviews very soon.

Leads…

Have a great Saturday!!! And if you haven’t already, don’t forget to join and share at the Freelance Writing Jobs social network!

Happy Anniversary and thanks for the leads. FYI – The Dog Related Writing lead has been flagged.

BTW I love the new look/colors!

  4. Matt says:

FWJ has come a long way. Congrats, Deb. :)

The Tech writer job for Future US should be a good gig. I’ve worked for them and they’re nice people.

On the other hand, I’ve been terribly frustrated this week with a bunch of bum leads – I’m looking for full time work and in the meantime I’m taking on small gigs and so far everything I picked up this past week was a bust for one reason or another. Much time wasted. I need to give the planetary alignment a push.

  6. Natasha says:

Just want to say that the new site is totally fantastic!!!! It is a pleasure to visit.

  7. Anne G. says:

@Cynthia – I’ve been running into that too. One guy offered a full-time writing gig. Did the work, he said it was perfect and hasn’t paid me and seems to have disappeared. I have the contract, so I know if he hasn’t paid in a couple weeks, I’ll be visiting Angela Hoy.

The other was the same way. Did the articles, he said they were exactly what he was looking for and the new assignments would be offered after the weekend after he paid the writers. I received payment, but never heard another word after that.

Makes me wonder if they use the words “full-time” to draw people in or if they are lying when they tell me my work is exactly what they had in mind.

    @Cynthia and Anne G -
I have no interest in full-time work, but thought I would share this about a bummer client I thought would never pay the balance.

I worked for this guy in January and he paid me pretty quickly for the first two assignments. Then I turned in the third batch and couldn’t get an answer from him. He used one piece but not the other, and I was getting ready to go to the “next step” on collections when suddenly he emerged and paid, with profuse apologies. Turns out he was in launch mode and crazy beyond words. Since I’ve been there many times before, I had hoped that would be the story …

Now he says he’ll be in touch as soon as they start to have cash flow because he wants more articles from me. I’m not holding my breath, but I am hopeful about this account.

Bottom line: don’t give up yet! but don’t just let it go either. Be back in touch every few weeks for a couple of months. THEN go to Angela Hoy!

    Cheers -
    Hazel

P.S. to Deb – I never told you how much I like the new design/colors. Great job – and thanks for everything!

  9. Anne G. says:

@Hazel – it’s definitely a finicky business. In this case, this is an established company that’s been around for 5 years so I’d expect a little more. He answered emails within minutes when I was writing the articles or submitting them, but after getting the email over a week ago saying payments would be sent on the last day of April, he’s not responding at all. I have bills to pay and I wish employers would remember that!

Good news though. One of the clients I had last year that ran out of work when his site launched. He apparently told the owner of a price comparison site about me and I just landed the job of rewriting all of the content.

  10. hazel says:

@Anne G – I bet you get that check in the mail in a few days!

  11. Grats on the re-write job, Anne!

  12. Anne G. says:

@Hazel – Thanks! (Though it’s auto-deposit, so don’t have to wait on the mail!)

@TW – Thanks! It couldn’t have come at a better time. My husband’s on 32 hours again (after a 2 week reprieve), dealing with his pay cut and there’s talk of layoffs which means after almost 32 years with this company, he’ll be moved to 2nd or 3rd shift. Though we’d still rather have the off-shift than laid off completely. His co-worker was laid off in November and still hasn’t found a job that pays what he was making.

  13. I hear ya there. My sister is in the same boat. She found out that she was going to get laid off from her present position, so she got in touch with her regional manager and found out she was eligible for one of the higher-up jobs, so she put in her resume. She’s got her fingers crossed that she gets the new job because if she doesn’t, she’s going to be joining the ranks of the unemployed.

I’m just keeping my fingers crossed that I stay busy. So far I’m on word-of-mouth status…I haven’t had to look for work since December. But having gone the self-employed route before, I know the trade winds can be fickle, so I’m enjoying the influx of work while it exists, to prepare for the lean season.

Then again, I might not hit one. We’ll just have to wait and see :) But kudos again…I feel for any person who has to struggle with the loss of spousal income. It sucks living paycheck to paycheck and knowing that if you lose even 10 hours a week it means a bill unpaid.

  14. Anne G. says:

@T.W. – Fingers crossed for your sister. It’s not a great market anywhere right now. My husband’s problem is that their company is so specialized, NAFTA killed them. Suddenly, their contracts were dropping them for lower prices in China and Mexico, so they hit a slump far before all of this started. The economic downturn made it worse. They used to have 250 employees, but now they’re down to 60.

I was listening to the news on CNN this morning talking about how many unemployed are giving up their job hunting and moving towards freelance work. More employees are hiring freelances so that they don’t have to pay benefits and can hire when needed and not worry about lay-offs. They went on to mention this one site for your freelance job hunt and I cringed because it’s one of those “pay us before we send you any listings” sites so now thousands will be padding the owner’s pockets. I’m really sad they focused on that site and not one more like Deb’s.
