Freelance Writing Jobs for September 14, 2009

Today is clean slate Monday, how are you making a fresh, positive start? I’m going to do my best to avoid all negativity and just focus on the good, the ideas and opportunities I believe in, and being the best person possible.

Speaking of positivity, I spent yesterday in Upstate New York attending my nephew’s Eagle Court of Honor. My nephew is only 15 and already he has made contributions many of our experienced politicians and business leaders never will. He was lauded by politicians and community leaders. On the drive home I reflected on all this teen has done in his charitable work and mentoring others. Are my contributions enough? I’m not talking about this blog, but giving back to the world in general.

What is your legacy?

  • Sorry leads are so late in the morning lately. There are so many places to search nowadays it takes 3 to 4 hours to get them all in. I thought about posting the night before but by morning half those jobs are flagged or filled. Thanks for your patience while I shuffle around the schedule to see what I can do to get these out earlier.
  • Finally, if you know of an international freelance writing lead, feel free to post it in the comments or send to me for inclusion. I find what I can, but I can’t translate most of the international opportunities available to writers.

I’m not sure if the “Health Articles Writer” is the same ad I replied to over a month ago, but the wording is very similar. If the person sends back an email asking for three samples, she provides press releases or magazine articles and asks you to condense them into short articles for the internet, and then says she’ll pay you for all three, tread carefully!

I did exactly as she asked and am still awaiting payment. Excuses have ranged from “There’s no internet in the city where I am currently attending a conference” (I’d like to know what city doesn’t have any internet) to “I mailed you a check last week.” (Yet she didn’t have my mailing address so she couldn’t have mailed a check.)She swore I’d get a call last Friday with a firm answer of where my money is and I haven’t heard a thing.

I just wanted to say mucho thanks for all the leads. Heard back from an inquiry from last week!

Question for the group: Has anyone worked with InkSplash Media? They appear to be involved in a few areas, including K-12 pub. There website has the expected info and client listings. They are requesting samples to be written based on criteria (which is not uncommon in K-12 assessment and curriculum). However, before working on one these, I just wanted to get some input from others. I also have a query out to them as to ownership (especially a 1-page lesson sample).

    thanks,

    mel

  3. Lauren says:

    Hi Deb-

The Atlantic one says it’s full-time in the DC office.

  4. sarah says:

    hi,
in case you didn’t catch it by now, the freelance position in Budapest is an ad posted by a native english speaker living in Budapest (an expat) who is LOOKING for a freelance writing job, not offering one.
    thanks.

  5. Tish Davidson says:

Under Education and Academic Writing Jobs, the Proofreader/Editor for Academic Papers and Professional Documents (Chicago) is an advertisement for editing services, not a job offer.

  6. Beth V says:

Thanks for the leads Deb! The Arizona Travel Writer lead would be perfect for me to add to my income. I live in Northwest Arizona, on Route 66, near Grand Canyon West and Hoover Dam. I’ve applied so we’ll see what happens.

    Beth

  7. Your site is such a time-saver. Thank you!

  8. Debbie Ferm says:

Your leads are worth waiting for Deb. Thanks for all you do!

  9. Dan Rafter says:

    Hi, Deb:

Thanks, again, for all the great leads you provide. Just a note, though, warning anyone about applying for the sixth listing in the content-writing jobs category, for TOPTENreviews. The company only pays based on a revenue-share model. The ad is a bit vague on this, but you don’t get paid per post or story, just a portion of revenue that a page you create generates.

    Dan

  10. Therese says:

My mom grew up in upstate NY :) It’s pretty out there and have friends/family in the city.

Thanks Deb and congrats on your gig with Demand Studios :)

FYI – I don’t think I got the lead on here but I wanted to pass along a “shady” writing ad I came across on C-list. There is an ad floating around C-list that was placed under freelance writing but it’s a mystery shopping type deal and you basically grade/write a review on the service and you have to go through a “test run” with them.

It sounded weird and the person who responded back to my email didn’t sound very professional (and was a bit rude). When I replied and told her I wasn’t interested in mystery shopping (and I mentioned the ad was misleading). I’m sorry but mystery shopping and writing a measly review is not considered freelance writing to me (or that’s my opinion!)

WEIRD! Just want to save my fellow writers the hassle of applying for this ad. The company is Author Review Guild. FYI.

  11. Holly Bowne says:

Thanks very much for the hard work you do compiling these job lists for us, Deb. We are so grateful. And the comments from other writers are helpful as well. Have a great evening!

  12. Frank says:

Item #8 under Proofreading/Editing isn’t a job. It’s an editor who posted an ad for her services in the wrong section of Craigslist.

  13. Christi S. says:

Deb, thanks again for all the leads, and for taking the extra time too! Anything and everything helps!

  14. Kenna says:

I got here late, next day, so your late posting works for me! Have a great week everyone!

  15. maryann says:

Thanks so much to Anne G who wrote the warning above. I did apply for that and now I’ll be sure to be careful. It’s great when people share their warnings. Too bad there are scamers out there, but if we all ” have each others back” hopefully we can avoid many.

  16. Anne G. says:

@Maryann – You’re welcome. As an added note, within a few hours of posting that message, I got an email stating she didn’t realize I hadn’t been paid and was paying me immediately. I did get payment a few hours later.
