I’m definitely thinking the educational writer one is some kind of scam. They’ve been running the ad for at least a month in a bunch of different cities. It’s hard to believe they haven’t found a suitably experienced writer yet – like me for instance
I’d applied to Know Cancer a couple weeks ago. They’ll pay $20 for 1,000 words. Now that I know the rates and the kind of research that would be needed, I passed on it.
I was just scanning job ads in my area and came across a winner that I find insulting.
- Must be able to work 10 – 20 hours per week.
- Must be familiar with photo editing, proofreading, clerical work, manuscript prep work and graphic design.
- Must be familiar with Word, Quark, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Filemaker Pro.
All of this and you are paid a whopping $10 per week! The sad part is that I checked and it’s not a typo.
Anne G: That is definitely a new low – figuratively and literally!
@ Anne G. Wow! At 20 hours a week, that’s 50 cents an hour. That probably wouldn’t even cover the electricity needed to run a computer.
Thanks for the post.
Just curious since this is still so new to me, does there tend to be a slowdown leading up the holidays? I know when I was working a day job not much got done in our office in December, and absolutely nothing got initiated.
@ Andrea: Some of the places I usually visit have definitely been quieter the last few days. When that happens, I try to be a little more creative and dig a little deeper for leads. I’ll see what I can come up with for tomorrow.
@Jodee Yikes! I hope you didn’t think I was complaining that there wasn’t much up there. I just wondered because of your comment and wasn’t sure if that normally happens at this time of year. I certainly appreciate all your work.
@ Andrea: I didn’t take it that way at all! It’s something I do anyway…I like my morning hunt for leads (strange as that may sound), and I am always on the lookout for different places to find leads for you guys in addition to my usual online haunts.
Oh man, I wish I was a college student in NYC. That internship at Saveur magazine sounds awesome.
I had trouble finding this blog entry…it’s not listed on the top page I see. Finally did search terms and turned it up through the comments! Not sure why.
But glad I took the trouble, as I have extensive background writing on life insurance topics, so you had one very strong lead for me there.
Thanks!

Kristy, I write educational material and that ad definitely looked peculiar to me also.
Why is this category still not in the header? It needs to be…It’s Thursday night and I had to do a web search from the home page of this site to get to the “Thursday” listings. That’s not right.
Had to add this little gem I just ran across to our collection of insulting ads:
“Looking for 3 amateur article writers. You do not need any experience but you need to be able to write on multiple different subjects. Great for people without a job who want to work from home, or for someone looking some extra money. Email me asap.
* Compensation: no pay ”
Just wondering how you’re going to make any extra money writing for a job that offers NO PAY. Ummmm…. yeah.
Off for more laughs!
@Matt – “that’s not right?” Define right? I see writing gigs and blogging gigs – what categories did you have in mind?
Thanks to everyone for your patience as we make tweaks. We’re taking everyone’s thought and ideas into consideration.
@Deb When I enter from the home page, the categories don’t appear at the top (although they do appear on this page). What I’ve been doing is clicking on the heading “Writing Jobs for Web and Print,” but for the past few days, this has been linked directly to the first post listed instead of to the main “Writing Gigs” page. Normally, this would work ok, but sometimes the most recent post doesn’t appear on that main page for a while. I’ve been working around it by going to the first post and then clicking on the category I want up at the top to make sure I’m not missing anything.
I appreciate all the work you’ve put into this, and it’s definitely worth it to find the writing jobs, even if it takes a few extra steps.
Hi Andrea, the home page doesn’t list the categories for each specific blog (though I’m working on tabs to help navigate.) So you have to come to this particular blog for this particular blog’s categories. The home page is merely a portal to highlight the other blogs.
I realize it’s a little confusing because in the past FWJ was one blog. Now it’s a blog network featuring six blogs. Each blog has different categories.
The main page feed only takes you to the most recent post for each blog. You can click the blog’s “home” link or logo to scroll through all.
Hi all,
Just found your website today. I checked out the education writing job, and at least three sites claimed credibly that it’s a scam.
Thanks for the tip. I would have applied if you hadn’t been so quick on the uptake.
