I’m thinking about all the little things I do as a freelance writer – things that aren’t writing. For instance, every morning I take an hour or so to read email and respond to the most urgent. I also check all my stats to analyze the previous day’s traffic. I check the day’s earnings and note any payments or payouts. Of course, there’s that two to three hours each day that are spent trolling for leads. I often say writing is only part of a freelance writers job. What are some of the things you do as a freelancer that don’t involve writing?

A small note: I’ll be on the road tomorrow and probably won’t be able to offer much in the way of job leads. Please visit my friend Anne Wayman at About Freelance Writing for your daily dose.

Not a lot of good stuff out there today. Hopefully you’ll find at least something you can use!

    I spend a few hours a day just reading books, websites, and anything else that might help me in my career. I have a stack of about a dozen writing, editing, marketing and web design books I am working through. I also spend time marketing, and learning how to market myself. And to think, when I first started out a year ago, I thought that all writers did was write. Hahaha…

  2. James says:

    Might have to brush up on my Korean for this, cheers Deb

  3. Erika says:

    Wow – I wish I knew more about wine for the “wine and football” blogging job. I love football and I enjoy drinking wine, but not enough to write about it together! Dang, almost a good match.

  4. Rupa says:

    Deb,
    First of all – thanks so much! The efforts and time you put in to find and categorize job leads for us is much appreciated and not expressed enough.

    The fact is, despite great resources like yours, it still takes a couple of hours on an average to find and apply to gigs every day. (Of course, it would take a lot longer without places like your blog) Crafting a letter for each position, tailoring my resume to highlight the aspects relevant to the gig, attaching suitable samples – all of this takes a lot more time and effort than anticipated.
    Plus, there’s this need to keep up with social media, updates, articles and news on the topics I’m writing about/interested in. That takes a considerable amount of time too. Finding and participating in forums either in order to share/help someone or to promote my blog or a client’s product or find information is another factor.

  5. Kathleen says:

    Anyone else notice the “quick cat & dog book” (#6 under General/Misc) where it says “real easy stuff//does not take talent.” I was going to apply but after seeing that I feel like the person already has no respect for writers. Of course it takes talent. Not sure what I think about it. The money sounds nice but I wonder what kind of person I’d be dealing with.

  6. Emily says:

    I’m curious how many hours a day people DO spend writing?

    I’m a new freelancer so I’m still getting the hang of scheduling my time. So far I’ve seriously underestimated the time required for a few projects, but that’s okay; I consider it a learning experience. It’s good to know that I’m not the only one spending a lot of my day doing writing-related tasks that aren’t actually writing. :) (As for myself, it varies by the day but I’m trying to spend at least 4-5 hours each day writing, divided up between creative pursuits and jobs.)

    Also thanks for the leads – two good ones for me today!

  7. PJ says:

    How low can they go . . .

    Content Researcher ad: Compensation is $50 US for 200 – 300 pages of research content.

  8. Tish Davidson says:

    @Kathleen
    The turn-around time for the 100,000 word cat and dog book is about 2 weeks. That along with the does not take talent needed comment should be enough to tell you that you would be working with someone who is clueless.

    @Emily
    I actually write about 4-5 hours a day – a few more if I have multiple projects going, a few less if I am busy hunting up new work. I break up the writing with housework, cooking, dog walking, and applying for other jobs, although I can be pretty selective about what I apply for these days because I have a lot of well-paying work.

  9. I work 4-5 hours a day, tops, on content and journalism. Rest of my time is spent working on fiction work. I’ve been lucky with clients and projects, landing 2-3 month long gigs back-to-back all year, which has kept me in steady work without having to scrounge the job boards.

  10. Kenna says:

    What I do during the day as a writer depends on my assignments. If it’s a big project, like a book, I am flat out writing. I like it that way, more the better. If I am writing articles or blogs for the day with no major project, then I write, look for work, write, look at my messy office and write.

    Thanks for the leads!
