  1. Ann G. says:

A note on the Beverage Blogger. The job entails going into a government Web site that lists licensing applications from breweries and wineries and pulling tidbits to create blurbs on upcoming products or news. I tried out for this job. He will require five samples that he doesn’t pay you for. After digging through the database for an hour and coming up with what I thought were intriguing to me, the common beer and wine drinker, he said they were too bland and that while it was what he wanted, it looked like I went for the first items I came across therefore he wasn’t paying me and that I was welcome to try again. I didn’t bother.

On another note, I applied for Content Writers Needed that has now been flagged. I’m betting the reason why it was flagged was because of what he/she requires. I got an email back last night stating that I was perfect for the job, but to become one of the content writers I had to download two programs. The first is supposedly for Web Meetings. And the other gives the person access to watch my computer as I actually create the articles in Word. He/she claims this is to make sure I am doing the work without copying and pasting from other sites. I’m certainly not willing to give someone authorization to access my computer from a remote location.

Finally, I had one other job offer that cracked me up today. In this case, it sounded like a great job until the person asked for two original, never before published articles to “judge your quality.” According to the contract, the articles would become their property upon submission and I have to sign a form stating I give them permission to use these two samples without any compensation or credit. Ummm, I don’t think so!

Wow! Does this look fabulous now, or what?! I can’t imagine the time and energy that you’ve invested in changing the site. Kudos. May it work flawlessly and spread information, job leads and joy to all who visit.

    Seriously, job well done.

  3. Lindsey says:

Know a lot of effort has been put into the site redesign and that these are only the initial results. At the moment, though, prefer the old site by a country mile or two or three.

  4. Jacqueline says:

    You were missed – thanks!

  5. Wow, thanks for the great list, Jodee!

  6. Deb says:

@all – thanks for your time and patience.

@Lindsey – Really we didn’t change the design at all we just added a portal page to link to all the blogs. I do have to fix the sidebars up a bit, but it’s the same site it always was, just with more blogs. I’m sorry it doesn’t work for yo.

  7. Andy Hayes says:

Have the RSS feeds changed? This post didn’t come through on my reader. Actually I’ve not seen any posts for a few days but knew you were going to have some downtime…

  8. Phil says:

    Ann G.

You were absolutely right not to let someone monitor your computer like that. I write a lot on security and anyone permitting such monitoring is a fool, and that’s putting it nicely

  9. Andrea says:

As someone who is really new to freelancing, I guess I am too naive. I just assumed that all of these jobs were legitimate. Does anyone have any advice on how to separate the legitimate jobs from those people who are just trying to get you to do work for them for free or pull some other kind of scam?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

  10. Deb says:

    Hi Andy –

Yes, since these blogs have different URLs you’ll have to update your feeds.

    Thanks,
    Deb

  11. Chris says:

The videogame/technology writer is a new one a (very) small or tiny fee? Nice. Sounds like they’re really milling for bargain basement content.

  12. Bobbi C says:

    Jodee,
Whew–Glad you’re back up! (I was experiencing “Freelancewritinggigs” withdrawal symptoms yesterday.)

The site looks great and thanks again for all of your efforts!!
    Bobbi

  13. Donnell says:

I have gotten a few legit jobs through this site, but some will scam you or try to get you to work for nothing. I have gotten replies from several who say they want me to work for them, but ask me to be patient because “they are an up and coming company and can’t afford to pay me at this time”… those replies get no response from me. A recent health and fitness lead I found here wanted people to work for 50 cents per article!

  14. Chris says:

The new site does look good, nice organization. Only one complaint–the job leads link was at the bottom rather than the top of the home page–I don’t think I’m alone in stating this is the biggest draw to the site (although the articles/forum discussions are great too). It just took me a few minutes to find my way here. Other than that I look forward to the new info.

@ Ann G.–Sounds like you had some real winners lately, lol. I thought I’d seen some shady leads-but access from a remote location takes the cake!

@Andrea–It is a real shame that we always have to keep alert for scams. It can be difficult to tell. Some signs are jobs that just sound way too good (too high paying for the work involved) and then require fresh samples or signing up for some kind of a website. In general, be wary of sending in fresh samples because some places are just looking to use your free samples and never actually hire anyone. Also I don’t recommend pursuing jobs that require you to sign up for their website just to apply or pay a fee to access their leads. Bear in mind that you’re looking to make money so paying or giving away free content is counterproductive (there are plenty of leads out there for free). It takes some time, but you develop a sixth sense for shady potential scams. If it sounds fishy or requires too much work just to apply–stay away.

  15. Jacqueline says:

@Chris – I agree. Jodee deserves top billing lol

  16. Deb says:

Hi Chris – Hi Jacqueline – I agree but I’m not the one who set it up this way and I haven’t yet had the time to tweak. I’ll also have a navigation bar set up in the sidebar to make it easier to find.

I do hope you’ll all support all of FWJ’s bloggers.

  17. Jacqueline says:

@Deb – of course! The site looks great and I’m sure all the fine tuning will be done in time. I’m sure others will not be happy about the commenter rankings, though, but I’m now on tap to be tied for first!

  18. Roxie says:

@ Andrea: Anytime they ask for fresh samples and you are taking the risk, send a PDF, not a word doc. – it makes it harder to them to steal your work. I send PDF samples almost all the time anyway. You just never know.

@ Ann: Was it a “web-meetup” software. I received a similar e-mail, asking me to download two things from a site called writersheaven. Then I was told the download is free, but eventually I’ll have to get it and will be compensated for it in my salary. Sound familiar at all? He wanted me to write a short snippet in front of his eyes via web meetup. I mean, I felt like “excuse me I don’t need to do this” – I’m a good writer and no editor has ever asked me to do that. It’s all very fishy to me.

  19. Claudia Peel says:

Good job, guys. It works for me.

  20. Geri says:

    Hi,

The site looks great! Are the archives still available?

  21. Roxie says:

And then I replied (explaining that no one has ever asked me to do this, I have samples, etc… “Good luck in your search for more naive writers.” And then I received this e-mail:

    “Some clarifications for you:

    1. Yes this is an AUTOMATED email, but I get like 100s and 1000s of
applications everyday and I have just this much to tell them that’s
why I use this feature. If this disappoints you then I am very sorry.
But if you really have something to say/ask about the procedure I
shall reply myself and not through auto, but yeah that won’t be
    realtime.
    2. Yes I would like it if you could “prove” your writing capabilities
    to me for three reasons:
    a. I have such love for english language that it makes my heart bleed
as to why do people have to copy someone else’s creation
    b. in the process i loose a lot of time that eventually i have to
complete so many pending orders in such less time myself.
    c. If job seekers can question the employers credibility, then I guess
employers should be given this right as well, because ultimately
people like me loose time and money both!

I hope we get to work together if our outlooks match with each other’s

    Thanks for reading and applying.

    God Bless.”

I’m not allowing anyone to access my computer remotely for any reason, and especially not for verifying my credibility. You can check my credibility with samples or by reading my cover letter with mentions of credentials. This sounds like a scam, and its such a ridiculous attempt to make it not look like a scam. And there’s no mention of this company, that has been in business for 5 years. Besides I don’t do lower paying “bulk-writing orders.” Crazy.

  22. Roxie says:

And wow “it makes my heart bleed
as to why do people have to copy someone else’s creation” and “I hope we get to work together if our outlooks match with each other’s”

What love for the English language. LOL.

  23. Kenna says:

Great job on the new site.

Experience means everything as a freelancer. I have a checklist to tell if the client is legit.

    1) Phone Interview (unless out of the country)
    2) Contract
    3) UpFront
    4) Care about you as a person
    5) Encouraging
    6) Look over my work, like it, see how it’s what they want
    7) Pay every week or two weeks
    8) Other writers work for them
    9) They have nothing to hide.
    10) I have their name, address, telephone number

  24. Jenny Burr says:

    I missed FWJ too!
I was having withdrawls. You’d laugh if I told you the number of times I tried to get to the site yesterday. I’m glad you’re back, up and running.

It’ll be great to have more posts to read along with the job leads.

  25. Thanks Jodie!! I missed you so much. It’s hard scourging craigslist and other job boards alone!

  26. Ann G. says:

@Roxie – that’s the one. I fully expect employers to check me out. I hope they do, they’d be idiots not to. But to offer remote access is absurd. I have done many Web meetings but it’s always been chat with a number of attachments sent to me before the meeting so that we can discuss them.

I asked him for the name of his legit Web site and he never responded. That alone makes me question him. I’m sure this is strictly a case of “link from my link and I get commission when you sign up.”

  27. Erin says:

Re: the article writers/ $15/article gig, that’s just another one for oboulo.com. I replied yesterday and found that out.

  28. Jodee says:

@ Tierra: Thank you! It’s good to be back! :)
