Great Help. Freelance may be the way to go. Thanks for the tips.

  2. Michelle says:

For the education listing for education.com–I had a bad experience with the editor and just wanted to share.

I’m slightly new to this, but anyway, I submitted the pitches for an ad I’d seen last year(November I think). The gal contacted me and said she wanted me to write about the one pitch, but she wanted it done as an interview, etc. I wrote it up, interviewing several people for the article. I didn’t hear from her for a long while and finally I contacted her.

She told me she didn’t need the article. That was it–she just didn’t need it. I was a little bit upset and asked if I could re-write it? Had I done something wrong and she said no, she’d just changed her mind.

    Be careful!

    • Tish Davidson says:

@Michelle– I think your instincts are excellent. I had a somewhat similar experience with education.com –responding to an ad by sending my CV and a clip and that met their very specific topic requirements, then being asked to send several more samples (again, I used published clips) and then nothing. Finally on inquiry was told that they were no longer interested in the initial topic.

I’ve been freelancing for 20 years and have published hundreds of articles and several books on education topics. It’s not that I was upset about not getting the job–rejection goes with the territory even after 20 years– but I was annoyed that they couldn’t figure out if I could write from a published clip and a CV that obviously showed my experience. Why ask for 3 more samples and then never respond? They have been around at least 2 years and do not seem to be a scam (I check occasionally to make sure my samples don’t get posted), but it appears that the editor is either inexperienced or a bit flaky. My take is that they are more trouble than they are worth. So if you write for them, don’t write original material to try to get the job and keep your open and your expectations lowered. Much of the stuff in their Web site is uncopyrighted public domain material form government agencies. It isn’t clear how much freelance material they actually use.

  3. Tish Davidson says:

Has anyone responded to general #2– Breakthrough Learning Center? The posting requires you to send an e-mail, get instructions from an autoresponder to download a full description of the job and then complete a survey. Sounds fishy to me.

    • Michi says:

I’d be interested to know this, as well. I was going to apply, but I’m not comfortable with downloading something and then taking a survey. Seems a bit strange. If anyone does this, please share.

  4. Michelle says:

@Tish–Thanks for the reply and sharing your experiences. I appreciate it!

  5. Richard says:

I’m a little disappointed the vegan gig requires you to be a vegan. I don’t drink, and I’ve written about wine. I have no tattoos but I’ve written about tattoos. Oh well…their prerogative.

  6. Kathleen says:

Oh gosh, just saw a really exciting gig that I would give my right arm for! I applied but I doubt I’ll get it. It seems like the “eh, it’s a job” type gigs are the ones I get and the “OMG I have to have this one!” jobs always pass be by. :(

  7. embee says:

Sorry to ask a dumb question, but which listing from today’s group is ‘education’? I couldn’t find it.

A couple weeks ago, I responded to k12teachersalliance.com, which I found on this site, and they wanted me to provide sample lesson plans which they said they may or may not use. I declined. Not sure if this would have turned into something, but I decided I would look elsewhere.
