Freelance Writing Opportunities for June 9, 2009

There are a couple of different types of listings here at Freelance Writing Jobs. There are listings that Jodee and I post – the regular job lists and Monday Markets. For those, we scour the Internet to find the best stuff for you.
I also post what I call the “standalone jobs”. These are the jobs that are featured on their own in a single post with no other listings. These jobs are from potential clients and employers who contacted me directly about posting their jobs and I like show them respect.
Here’s the thing, when we post lists of links and leads, we encourage folks to create a dialogue and talk about the jobs. It’s a good way to learn about the pay, the client and more. When I post a standalone job it’s a little different because the folks who place the ad contact me. You see, it took several years before FWJ became a top online community for freelance writers. Now that folks are seeking me out, I don’t want them to be insulted and scared by certain comments, and look for other freelance writing sites to post their job exclusives. These exclusive jobs bring me traffic, which helps to bring in the revenue I need to keep this place running. Plus I love being able to bring some jobs to you first before anyone else sees them. That’s why I used to close comments to the standalone jobs. Lately I’ve been forgetting though, and insulting comments are coming through again. So once again, I’m going to ask the members of this community to please be respectful in the comments when responding to an exclusive job ad.

You should list Associated Content, they pay any where from $1 to $3 per 400 word article on average, some people make some good money from them, hundreds per month.
Dragon,
Hundreds per month (at $3 an article) is good money? At $3 per 400 word article, it would take 40,000 words — a lot of writing in a month — to earn $300. My health bills are more than that.
I submitted an article on AC, but they declined it because it was less than 400 words (Oops I guess I didn’t read everything). But I joined because I heard that they paid weekly and I also heard that they can pay over $3 an article too (though sometimes also less), depending on the topic and if it is what they are looking for.
I’m not sure if I’m going to redo the article that was declined as of this moment, though, as I am hopefully in the middle of landing a few other gigs that I am focusing most of my attention on right now.
Deb
Sorry to hear that people are leaving comments that would cause you and FWJ some problems. I know that you closed comments before for that very reason.
Hey, this is your website. You should not have to feel it necessary to explain to us lucky visitors why you have comments turned on for some pages, and off for others. This is your business; your livelihood (I’m assuming
) Why on earth would you want to potentially alienate your paying clients by creating a forum for less than optimal commenting about that client. That’s clearly not what you are doing here.
I for one completely support your right to administer this blog in any way you see fit. And thanks for the daily flow of potential job ops. I’ve already gotten one hook up to coincide with a regular gig I’ve had for a bit now. As I stabilize with the work load, I’m now beginning to look up the ladder for better paying gigs, and some of those are the stand alone jobs you’re posting.
Please keep them coming & thanks!!
Deb — Are you still accepting applications for the humor blogging position? Thanks.
Sorry to hear about the insulting comments. If I get a chance, I will leave upbeat and tons of thanks for everything!!! xoxoxox
Personally, I quit looking at the comments about 4-5 weeks ago…for the most part. These days, I only come here to do a quick 30 second scan to see if anything piques my interest, and then I move on. I haven’t had to look for work since December (I’m lucky in that I have a full-time content provider out of the UK who keeps me super busy), and I do Demand Studios to pick up any slack outside of that.
The reason I quit reading? No moderation. There are far too many negative comments made. Far too many temper-tantrum writers (anyone remember Plan?) who are allowed to post and use words like “whore” to describe people who work for X amount per word/hour/article. A complete lack of moderation, allowing specific, specific arrogant writers to slam others for their choice of work. Specific, arrogant writers calling other writers “hacks” for their choice of work. Specific, arrogant writers who believe that their version of the “world” is the only version that exists, and anything outside of their little bubble is “wrong”.
Elitism in any form is ignorant. I choose not to deal with it
As such, I pretty much stopped reading these comments because the community here has gone south. The leads are fair, but to be honest, I haven’t seen anything that strikes my fancy in a long time. Then again, I’m lucky in that my hard work and diligence keeps me with steady freelance work, rather than having to scour the various websites and “wade through shit” as the other arrogant writers have put it.
My short stories are selling (I had a request for a sequel last week, even), which means my fiction work is getting off the ground, and I’m plenty busy doing content work for a “paper mill”. Am I “whoring” myself out? I don’t really care
I’m clearing 30 bucks an hour doing about 60% re-writes, 10% SEO, and 30% original content. 30 an hour is well above the national average, and I could care less if the writers who make 100+ an hour want to scream and yell about the lack of quality work, how they have to “fight” over the table scraps anymore, or any of the other things they like to whine about. If they (the specific, arrogant writers) truly wanted to put food on the table for their family, they would be willing to do whatever it takes, rather than stand around with their nose in the air, claiming how unfair it is that all the “good work” is going so cheaply to other writers.
Not my fault that I’m just as qualified and have more motivation to do the work than you
Meanwhile, I’m making bank.
At the end of the day the only person holding you back from success is you. You make the choices that dictate how your life ends up, not those around you. You can either be a success, or you can be a failure.
I choose to succeed. Where do you stand?
@TW – Now that I have more time on my hands, there will be better moderation. However, I do believe the majority of this community is very respectful and well within our comment policy.
@Beth – I still haven’t made a decision, if you want to send your application to me. There were hundreds of candidates and I’m still going through them all. My goal is to have the new hire by July 1st.
@James – Thanks. Every now and then folks need reminders, you know?
@Dragon Blogger – I don’t post AC jobs because they fall well below our guidelines. I made a promise to this community not to post certain jobs and since AC pays a lot less than $10 they don’t qualify.
Rock on all, and have a great day.
@T.W. – I disagree with you, I find that *for the most part* the comments here are respectful, if spirited.
This site offers a sense of community to freelance writers of all kinds, most of whom face similar problems – how to find work, how to charge for it, how to present ourselves to prospective clients, how to do our jobs efficiently while making money and having an enjoyable experience. That’s why I keep coming.
@Deb – thanks, again and again, for providing us a place to talk about those things. Is there any chance to re-institute the forums? That might take some of the discussion out of the job listings.
Have a great day, all!
@hazel – Did you join the FWJ social network? http://freelancewritingjobs.ning.com/
There are already some cool discussions happening and in the upcoming weeks I’ll be tweaking even further.
I just got an offer from Atlantic Publishing to write one of their books, which would have been 65,000 words, for the whopping sume of $1200-1600. I thought it was a typo, but no, that’s what they’re offering. This isn’t a living wage. What’s the deal? I found the gig on this site, and I’m wondering if anyone here has worked for them.
The Atlantic Publishing job is a REwrite. The 65,000 words are usually already there, they’re just not structured very well. I’m working on my second project for AP and love it. They are very responsive and provide positive feedback (edits). For the time I put into the rewrite, the money works out to be a good hourly sum.
@TW- I do remember Plan and agree that his/her insults grew tiresome, especially since I was one of those he/she threw the insults at. But the best way to ignore a troll is by not responding. That’s what they want.
I applaud you to list quality freelance writing, but before you knock associated content, I only do AssociatedContent part time, I do blogging as my main secondary source of income which is far more profitable than A/C. Neither makes even close to enough for me to quit my day job.
The Greeting Card is just a contest, you input submissions and have a chance to win $300 if you win 1st place, odd’s are very low against the thousands of submissions, but I entered it anyway, hey I could get lucky.
