Monday Markets for December 1, 2008

This week’s edition of Monday Markets is focusing on photography magazines. I’ve included one that discusses outdoor photography and one that looks at how to combine photography with the latest technology. The third magazine on today’s list is all about the technical aspect of images.

Outdoor Photography Canada

Outdoor Photography Canada is published 4 times per year for the photographer
with a passion for outdoor adventure. Photographers of every level will enjoy all the
Landscapes, Wildlife, Nature and Sport that Canada and its wilderness has to offer.
Outdoor Photography Canada’s aim is to instruct the reader through entertaining,
interesting and informative articles and imagery covering all aspects of outdoor
photography using modern equipment and techniques. With this aim, Outdoor

FEATURE ARTICLES (max 1200 words)

Pro-File: (interview and gallery) of accomplished professional and amateur Canadian
Photographers.

Landscape: Provincial and National Parks or other wild places within Canada. How to
get there, best seasons to visit and best shooting locations within that area. These are
the basics. Writing beyond this is encouraged.

Wildlife: Where, when and how to best shoot Canadian wildlife. Only wildlife
indigenous to Canada will be considered.

Nature: From our protected parks to your own backyard. Subject matter here again
must be of Canadian origin.

Sport: All matter of outdoor sport within Canada will be considered. Preference will be
given to subject matter dealing with camping, hiking, canoeing, kayaking, skiing(snow
and water), backpacking, mountaineering, rock climbing/rappelling, sailing and how it
relates to the photographic field.

COLUMNS (max 500-650 words)

We always welcome new submissions for our columns. We have four areas open to
guest columnists.

Beginner Basics is for the beginner outdoor photographer. The content here must be
of a level that a beginner can understand and benefit from the tip or technique written
about.

Advanced Shooter. In this column, tips and techniques must be of an intermediate to
advanced level where the photographer can learn to polish his/her skills.

Let’s Go Digital! The discussion here is anything digital related, from the use of point
and shoot cameras to digital SLRs and computer editing techniques.

Pro Series. In this column pros share techniques that have proven effective in the field.
The tips here should be of a somewhat experienced level.

Travel. Canadian travel destinations. Not so much a how-to column as a how to get
there, where to stay, best eateries, etc. Also list best photo hot spots or lesser known
locations in the area. Background historical info of the area is also a plus.

Outdoor Photography Canada buys First North American rights and pays within 30 days after publication.

PC Photo

PCPHOTO is a national magazine published 8 times per year (6 bimonthly regular issues plus 2 special issues) for people who want to explore and expand their application of photography by making good use of the computer. We take a fresh look at the modern photographic world by encouraging photography and the use of new technologies. Editorial is intended to demystify the use of modern equipment by emphasizing practical use of the camera and the computer, highlighting the technique rather than the technical. PCPHOTO is written and presented for photographers of any computer persuasion — we use the PC to mean personal computer in its classic, original meaning. It also features and highlights both traditional, film-based photography and image-making with a digital camera.

Feature articles include:

1. Interview and portfolio displays of accomplished professional and amateur photographers.
2. How-to articles on highly photographic subjects and imagery to help the photographer better understand how the computer can be used to affect, adjust and control the image.
3. Non-technical equipment evaluations directed at all photographic enthusiasts. Methods and techniques for using, transporting and maintaining photo and computer equipment.
4. Reviews of new technology that can help readers make better images.

GENERAL POLICY
The majority of the magazine’s features and several departments are written and photographed by assignment. However, we do search for a variety of contributors from different backgrounds and geographic areas. Manuscripts submitted on speculation should be typewritten and double-spaced (a computer disk is fine, but we also need a hard copy for evaluation). Original photographs should never be sent to us. We will accept digital files of images only if a hard copy printout is included, and e-mail submissions will not be accepted. We receive too many submissions to check if yours was received. If you need that information, use a verifiable delivery service. All submissions must be accompanied by a SASE. All work is submitted as speculation (see Terms and Conditions) unless specifically assigned in writing by an assignment letter. Return or notification of possible use can be expected in approximately six to eight weeks. PCPHOTO buys one-time rights for publication in the magazine and on the magazine’s Website as part of our permanent archives. Payment is initiated on date of publication.

Thanks for inquiring about the submission guidelines for PHOTO Techniques magazine. We’re perhaps the most technical photography magazine on the newsstand, and cover both traditional and digital photography. Our readership is comprised of advanced amateurs and working professionals. As the name implies, many of our articles focus on the techniques that help produce exceptional photographs. We also focus on the science of photography. We’ve closely examined, for instance, the numbers behind the superiority of 16-bit imaging, and the techniques behind the manipulation of light, the interaction of photochemicals, and useful tips for processing and printing photographs. Many of our articles have featured experiments that readers can perform at home and duplicate the results for themselves.

Many of our readers are students of the Zone System, created by photographer Ansel Adams and others. Many are well-versed in Adams’ work and teachings, and several contributing editors specifically address the Zone System on an ongoing basis. Many readers are largely or solely digital. Articles on digital photography should cover the hows and whys of some aspect of the process of creating quality digital prints, rather than illustrating what one can do with various wacky Photoshop filters. Our readers also enjoy technical articles, scientific tests and guides that we present. “How-to” articles backed by concrete examples and good photographs are always welcome.
