I spent most of yesterday trying to get into a gmail account which, for some reason, wouldn’t allow me in. Frustration. Thanks for your patience, by the way. I’m still catching up from my trip and there are a lot of leads to go through. I’m sure I’ll be posting earlier as my workload gets back to normal. Some news:
- If you’ve been considering attending the Copywriting Success Summit, please note October 1 is the last day you can take advantage of the $100 discount. After that all tickets will be full price. Here’s my original post regarding the summit, in case you think you might be interested.
- Good news – the FWJ forum is back! It’s sort of in beta right now, but do feel free to browse, chat and sign up. This forum is by popular request so I hope you’ll all become frequent, productive members. This is a soft launch. Once I have all the folders up, etc., I ‘ll make a full fledged announcement. You’re welcome to jump right in though.
- There’s a Facebook Fan Page for FWJ now, sign up if you’d like!

9/11 was one of the deciding factors in my leaving my full time job to become a freelance writer. Soon after witnessing the attacks on the World Trade Center, my husband and I learned we were pregnant. We didn’t think we wanted to raise our child in New York City. After 9/11 and 30 years of living there, I knew I had enough of the city and all the negativity that surrounds it. While I probably would have made the decision to leave my job eventually, 9/11 cinched things for us. Some people see today as anniversary. I see it as a disturbing but important memory, one that led to so many levels of change for so many people.
Here’s to positive change for all of us.

Isn’t it funny how the seasons affect the mood? I find myself at my best during spring and summer but once autumn kicks in I’m not as buoyant. I don’t get the winter blues or anything like that, but I do mourn the lack of warmth and long, sunny days. I woke up this morning and it was dark out. The wind was blowing and there’s inclement weather in the forecast. I’d much rather be typing this while sitting in my sunny office with the windows open. Instead, the drapes are drawn and the wind is my soundtrack. It makes such a difference, doesn’t it?

Freelance Writing Jobs for August 7, 2009
August 7, 2009 by Deb
Actually I was wrong yesterday. Anyone CAN be a writer. Thanks to content sites accepting anyone without even seeing writing samples, anyone can, indeed, become a writer. However, not everyone can be a good writer and I think that’s the difference. Now before I receive another flood of hate mail, let me explain a little:
I’m not trying to discourage new writers at all. While I hope I’m giving them a good place to start, I also hope I’m being realistic. I enjoy providing this haven for writers of all levels to discuss and share. However, as a lot of the writing we see on the web indicates, not everyone can write well. One can start a blog and write, but that doesn’t mean one can write well. Also, unless one is willing to put in several hours a day, one’s blog won’t be very successful because there’s more to blogging than writing a rant and hitting send. It’s one thing to do this for a hobby but it’s a whole other ballgame to do it for a living.
While it may make people angry (and thanks to all who wrote to me calling me a no talent hack or telling me to get over myself, by the way. Hugs and kisses backatcha) the truth is, if you never had an interest in writing, never wrote anything in your life, have no idea how to string together a sentence or build traffic to a blog, you can’ t just get out of bed and say, “I think I want to work at home. What are my options? Hmm.. envelope stuffer? No, that’s too much work. Sell on ebay? I have nothing to sell. Virtual assistant? I hate making phone calls. Wait a minute…this blogging or writing thing looks easy enough. I think I’ll do that!”
I apologize if I insulted anyone. However, I won’t sugarcoat a thing. Some people aren’t cut out for writing. Some people can’t write well. I won’t say anyone can be a good or even successful writer because it simply isn’t true. Anyone can write, but not everyone can write well. Anyone can Google and rewrite someone else’s Googled and rewritten article, but not everyone can write well. Anyone can apply for a writing job, try for the Great American Novel or query magazines. Not everyone will be accepted.
Not everyone can write well.

Do you use an editorial calendar? I have one, it helps me to stay on track – and I don’t know what I would do without it. I know many writers have fancy programs, but I never invested too much in my editorial calendar. Up until a few months ago, I used a giant wall calendar, now I use my Outlook. I’m the type of person who needs bells and whistles to go off so I can have reminders. If I don’t log everything I need to do, I’ll become forgetful.
What do you use to keep track of all your projects and deadlines?
If you have time, take a ride around the FWJ network. Ever notice how one small setback can throw your schedule off for the whole day – even an entire week? One power outage, one server issue, one phone call from school, there are so many things that can throw us off track. Regrouping can be difficult, especially if you have a lot on your place. I’ve worked around the clock with very little sleep in order to make my deadlines. As a freelancer I had a few policies in place:
1. Never make a promise I can’t keep – If I say something is going to be done a certain day, it happens.
2. Communication is key – Good communication with clients is the key to a successful career. In fact, if you let them know you had a setback, your client might be willing to give you an extension. However, using excuses constantly to get out of work or extend deadlines backfires as clients always catch on.
3. Don’t sweat the things we can’t control – Take a deep breath, have a cup of coffee, meditate…and then get back to work. Don’t panic, don’t get flustered and don’t waste precious time bemoaning things that are out of your control. Take a few minutes to relax and tackle it with good cheer. Frustration shows up in one’s writing.
What are your policies?

I’d like to apologize for including a few clunkers in yesterday’s list. Freelance Writing Jobs has a policy never to post jobs under $10, jobs from term paper mills and other insulting gigs. In my haste to get leads posted, a couple slipped through the cracks. So sorry.
I was doing a search for “freelance writing jobs” this morning on Twitter. I find Twitter searches are a great way to meet like-minded people and mingle with members of the community. As a result, many of you might find me following, so I can keep connected. If you’d like to follow me on Twitter, I’m @debng. If you would like to receive updates whenever a new blog post appears at FWJ follow us @freelancewj.
Also, I’m in the process of creating a Freelance Writing Jobs social network on Ning. This will allow us to share even more. There is a discussion forum, places to share videos, images and podcasts, we can talk about jobs and updates and all issues freelance writers face. Now, it’s in the raw stages and I haven’t started inviting folks yet, but if you’re interested in being a part of the Freelance Writing Jobs social network on Ning, please join!
So, a few leads, more tomorrow… Read more
