Good Luck!
Thanks for the leads Jodee. I was away for the past few days at a movie festival and had a great time chatting with directors and taking screenwriting workshops. I came home to a few new contracts, a pay check and a copy of a magazine with an article by moi. All in all, not bad to come home to!
A few weeks ago, somebody posted a link to a site that lists only educational writing jobs (sample questions for standardized tests, textbook material, etc.) Aybody know what site that was? I thought I bookmarked it, but apparently not.
Krista – I know the one you mean. I don’t have it handy at the moment but I’ll post it if I find it.
Krista – Not sure if this is the one you are looking for, but it’s the only one I know of:

Thanks for the leads, Jodee. There are several that I`ll be pursuing this morning.
@Fiona Thanks! I would really appreciate it.
Thanks for the list Jodee. I’m always happy to see political writing jobs – too few of those around.
Krista & Diana – that’s the one I know of as well.
Hello, all. Relatively new to the site, but not at all new to searching for freelance jobs. Does anyone have any advice for a girl trying to land her first freelance job/contract? I’ll admit, I’m finding a ton of frustration in my search. I believe I have excellent writing skills (and two degrees to show for it!) but that doesn’t butter the bread. Any advice would be more than appreciated!
@ Diana That’s the one. Thanks so much!
Hi Erin,
I am new to freelancing and have been searching sites for a while. I have been some work for Pure Content. It only pays $6 for a 500 word article. I got them to pay $7. I know for everyone else that has done this for a while that this is a joke in pay, and it certainly is, but it may be something to look into. They will give tons of writing assignments if you want them.
Just as a question for the crowd, how long on average does it take everyone to crank out a 500 word article? I am probably rather slow. I am just wondering about how quickly experienced get these articles out…my focus is on financial articles. I suppose if I could do three good quality articles in an hour that would be decent enough pay . . . but at the moment it takes me longer than that to do the research, write and edit the content.
In any case, if you want guaranteed work, where you don’t have to submit articles and hope it gets selected from the crowd, like on Helium, then this may be something to look at. The bad thing, aside from really low pay, is that you do not keep intellectual copy writing, which is the great thing with Helium if your article is chosen from an editor.
@ Shani
As for how long it take to crank out a 500-word article, it really depends. For a topic I was familiar with, I’d say 45 minutes (including proofing). However, it can be much longer if research is involved and a find it a difficult topic to understand. These would take an hour and a half to two hours, which also includes proofing.
I mean if I find it a difficult topic to understand.
@Erin/Shani–Another good site to help get started is Demand Studios. They pay $15/400-600 word article and they pay once a week and are very reliable and timely. It’s still not great pay for an article, but you’ll start off doing how-to articles that are really just a series of steps and don’t even need to flow like a regular article. Forseeably, you could knock 2-3 out in an hour and make a nice hourly rate. You can even suggest your own topics, pending review of editors, so you can write about topics you are familiar with. The only drawback is that you are assigned a limit–10 articles when you start. Once you reach 10, you can’t submit any new ones until some have been edited and processed and it can take a while. In general though, I’ve found that it works out to about 10 a week, so it’s good for $150.
I have do a lot of research for these. I have to peruse the financial prospectus and do other research for each of these companies. I was a full trader a few years back at Fidelity Investments. I have kind of been out of touch since then with the financial world and have had to refresh my financial lingo. So, it’s been tough cranking out anything less than 2 -2 1/2 hours. So, $7 dollars for an article is rather lousy. I pointed that out to the company but they won’t negotiate…but I guess it is steady pay until I find better payouts. I will check out Demand Studios though…that sounds as though it may be a better fit! Thank you.
Does anyone know of any good medical writing sites? My husband thought he could do some audiology focused articles. It has been hard finding anything good for him.
Shani, your husband could try BrightHub (www.brighthub.com). They’re a decent employer (they pay once a month & provide lots of advice and feedback if you need it) and at $10 for a 350 word article it does pay better than what you’ve described. Mostly a science/technology oriented site; they have a medical science channel among others.
Thanks for another great list.
Now that b5 is lowering our pay I hope you’ll stop featuring their jobs since they fall below your minimum.
