Correct me if I am wrong, but here in the United States of America, Labor Day 2012 is September 3rd. Today, May 1, is Law Day. Elsewhere, May 1 is celebrated in Communist countries as the Day of the International Solidarity of Workers.
Hi Tom,
You’re absolutely correct about Labor Day in the US. In other countries though – many of them not Communist – May 1 is Labor Day.
The idea of May 1st as a day to celebrate workers originated in the US, before there was a Labor Day or, indeed, a communist party. The history of labor movements and workers’ rights is fascinating…
Tom,
I found your post a bit haughty, and don’t know why you felt the need to essentially “correct” Noemi. Sure, you are correct, but, for all intents and purposes, she was correct to begin with.
If this were a political or holiday site, terminology would matter, but for this site’s purposes, referring to “Day of the International Solidarity of Workers” as a “Labor Day” is no biggie. In fact, it was the wise thing to do — it better gets the message across to readers who are familiar with the the latter holiday/term.
Thanks for the list, Noemi!
Hi Chris,
Thanks for the clarification, and you’re welcome for the list.
