Scholastica
We’re looking for someone to help make academic research available more quickly and affordably through better technology. Our ideal candidate is someone who is very detail-oriented, excited about new technology, and eager to learn more about the academic publishing process by being directly involved. If you have experience with LaTeX or different citation styles (Chicago, AMA, APA, MLA, etc.) that’s great, but not required. We’re supportive of remote work, so if you’re not based in Chicago, that’s fine.
In this part-time role, you will prepare academic articles for publication using Scholastica’s internal toolset. You will move articles through the production workflow, which includes typesetting and formatting, checking formatting accuracy, checking citation accuracy, and communicating progress to authors and editors.
You will work with a great team whose values include work-life balance, fairness, and inclusion. We have a positive and supportive work culture, so you can expect to work directly with all members of the team (programmers, sales, customer success, marketing, design, etc.).
Things you could expect to work on
- Detailed check of article metadata
- Format citations in specific citation styles
- Proofread and edit academic articles
- Communicate with authors and editors
- Document errors/bugs for the technical team
- Maintain article production workflow
Job requirements
- Strong written and editing skills
- Experience with XML/HTML
- Preferred but not required – experience with LaTeX
- Strong verbal communication skills
- Comfortable using and learning new technologies and apps
- Strong attention to detail
- Remote work (outside the Chicago office) is acceptable
- Reliable internet connection (15Mbps download and 5Mpbs upload)
Compensation
- Hourly compensation between $25 and $30 per hour, based on experience
- 20 to 35 hours per week, depending on your schedule and available work (minimum of 20 hours/week)
- Flexible working hours and schedule (during initial onboarding, hours will need to be within the M-F 8am-5pm CT window)
- Work with experienced startup team members
About Scholastica
Academic journals are where researchers share the latest knowledge and breakthroughs in their fields. However, the process for publishing research is currently much harder and more expensive than it should be given the rapid progress of technology. You can read about the $12B scholarly publishing industry and its institutional problems in The Economist and on Vox.
Scholastica is dedicated to making the research published in academic journals more affordable and accessible to all. We make beautiful tools that enable journal editors, reviewers, and authors to work together more easily, and to make the management and publication of academic journals more efficient.
