As freelance writers, we usually work on a project-by-project basis, rather than as full-time employees of a single company. We work independently, often for multiple clients simultaneously, and may specialize in different types of writing such as blogging, content writing, copywriting, technical writing, or creative writing.
There are many benefits to freelance writing, such as the flexibility to work from anywhere, the ability to choose your own projects and clients, and the potential to earn a higher income than you might as a traditional employee. BUT, the tedious part is that we need to continuously look for gigs—unless we get retainer clients, which affords us a more regular income.
In this post, we look at how we can use ChatGPT to help with this task. Yes, ChatGPT can be used to find freelance writing jobs, but with some limitations.
Using ChatGPT to find freelance writing jobs
As the title says, this is an experiment. I came up with some prompts to find freelance writing jobs, and this is what happened.
Using keywords to search for jobs
One way to use ChatGPT to find freelance writing jobs is to start by entering keywords that are relevant to the type of work you’re interested in. For example, if you’re interested in content writing, you could try searching for “content writer jobs” or “content writing opportunities”. This is what ChatGPT gives you.
Not too helpful, right? So I asked for links…and this is what I got.
Here we see the limitations of ChatGPT. It can give you sites, but not specific job opportunities. This is because the platform does not have access to real-time data. Its cut-off date is September 2021. At this level of search, you may discover websites where you can find jobs, but that’s it.
Did you notice it included FreelanceWritingJobs!? 🙌🏾
Utilizing advanced search options for more targeted results
So, what next? Let’s try using advanced search options, much like what we do when googling:
- Location
- Industry
- Job type
- Required skills
Let’s say I want to find copywriting jobs in Las Vegas.
Again, it can only show websites and not jobs. However, with the links including advanced search terms, it can save you time googling for jobs. No need to know how to use search engine queries to get the most relevant results!
Let’s try this for remote copywriting jobs.
We get similar results—websites with some keywords included in the search.
Not too satisfying, I know.
But what about doing a search based on the industry?
Let’s say you specialize in health.
Or how about nonprofits?
Now, that’s more like it! I like how you can discover sector-specific sites where you can find jobs. And, specialist freelance writers will find this super useful.
The Verdict
My honest opinion: ChatGPT can be used to augment your freelance writing job search, but it doesn’t enable you to completely do away with manual search.
As you can see from the searches I did above, the platform only gives websites, and while it helps with the keywords, you still have to look at the search results on these websites to find specific jobs.
And that’s what Freelance Writing Jobs is here for…we still do the manual search and vetting of freelance writing gigs for you. 💪🏾
