Things You Need to Have a Productive Morning as a Freelance Writer

If you’ve been working at home as a freelance writer for long enough, you know that the key to a productive workday starts with a good morning. Developing routines and getting organized at the beginning of the day creates the opportunity to write compelling content that meets the needs of your target audience and/or clients. To do this, however, there are a few essential things you’ll need to get your day off to the right start.

A Quiet Space

When you’re home alone, it doesn’t take much to distract you from your work. That’s why the first thing you need as a freelance writer is a quiet space to work. Your home office or work area should be in a room that is away from most common distractions like the television, pets, and the kitchen.

Lots of Natural Light

Another thing that can throw off your productivity levels is poor lighting. This is especially true in the morning. You’re just waking up and likely still a bit groggy. Having the proper amount of light in the room helps to stimulate the mind and wake the senses. The best type of light, of course, is natural light. Try opening your blinds, shades, or curtains in the mornings to allow the sunlight in.

Enjoyable Music

While you want to be away from most distractions, too much quiet can cause you to wander off in your mind. A great way to prevent daydreaming is to have some enjoyable music playing in the background. You can create a playlist or listen to a radio. Try to choose music that inspires you to be productive and not get too wrapped up in your emotions or reminiscing.

Wellness Supplies

You spend a lot of time in your office writing. As sitting down for hours and staying in the house all the time can both be bad for your health, incorporating a few wellness items in your workspace is highly recommended. Adding elements of nature with indoor plants, using aromatherapy with candles, an air purifier, a desk water fountain, and perhaps a few exercise items like stretch bands and an exercise ball can help you to stay healthy while working.

Great Coffee

You work long hours as a writer, and fatigue is likely to set in at some point. To keep you alert and to get those creative juices flowing, it might not be a bad idea to have some good coffee on hand or even a coffee subscription. You can purchase a small coffee maker, syrup, creamer, milk, and your favorite coffee roasts. You could also purchase cold brew coffee instead and save yourself a ton of time in the mornings. What is cold brew coffee? It’s essentially coffee that is made using room temperature or cold water. You can make it in large batches and simply heat it up before going into your workspace to start your day.

Healthy Snacks

Even if you’ve had a good breakfast in the morning cravings occur. Hunger pains can be some of the biggest distractions as a writer, so it’s best to have a plan. Instead of having to head to the kitchen or take a break and go grab something to eat, have some healthy snacks on hand. In the morning, pack a lunch bag just as if you were going to work. Along with your lunch be sure that you have a few snacks to curb those cravings. Steer clear of sweets and junk food as this can slow you down and ruin your productivity.

Task Management Application

Even after you’ve clocked out for the night there are things going on in your writing business. Clients are responding to emails and sending in requests, followers are leaving comments and asking questions, and so much more. That’s why your mornings should start with organizing assignments for the day. While drinking your coffee, take a few minutes to review emails, check social media, and update your to-do lists and calendars so you can work more productively throughout the day. A task management app can be an ideal tool to invest in to help with this. It can help you to create a to-do list each day and provide you with quick notifications and reminders to ensure you meet your deadlines.

Mornings are everything to a freelance writer. When the mornings are in disarray, it can throw a monkey wrench in the rest of your day. From distractions and fatigue to your wellbeing and organization, you can make your mornings more efficient and become a better writer by using solutions such as those described above.
