What do Freelancers Write for Fun?

Most freelance writers are very busy.  As freelancers, we’re small business owners, which means we do a lot more than write.  We have to be marketers, accountants, sales people, supply managers, customer service representatives, and so much more!  All of those tasks doesn’t leave much time for writing for pleasure.

However, it’s important that you take some time once a week or even once a month (more often if you can) to sit down at your keyboard or with pen and paper in hand and just write for no other reason than to have fun.

There is a reason why you became a writer.  Don’t forget those roots.  Instead, set aside some time to remember what makes you passionate about writing and why you enjoy it.  Write a story or diary entry.  Write some poetry or start a book.  Whatever type of writing puts a smile on your face — do it.

I enjoy doing light-hearted profiles of people where I get to ask them questions like,”what your favourite movie?” I find that it’s fun to hang out with new people and just get them to chat about themselves and their passions, and still get to write about it. I also enjoy writing movie reviews – I get to watch a movie, which I may very well enjoy, and then chat about it ( and get paid for it).

Unfortunately, I don’t land these types of assignments nearly as much as I would like, as my credentials tend to veer towards more serious topics like IT, business, HIV, women abuse etc.

Wow, I have completely forgotten why I even got into writing before reading this post. Thanks for the reminder!

Most of the time, I’ve been writing for money. When I was younger, I used to keep a daily journal and write novels (unfinished, of course) for the pure pleasure of it. I originally wanted to start my writing career because of how enjoyable it was for me. Now, it’s simply just work. I occasionally find enjoyment through my writing, but I never do it for myself anymore.

I may actually start a new journal again. Right now is an interesting time in my life. I’m going through many transitions in my life, and it would be interesting to record my progress through time.

I also have many unfinished novels I could work on writing (and hopefully finish). I’ve always wanted to be an author, but I haven’t been really putting any time into it.

This is a great idea! Thanks for the nudge. I’m going to do all of my “fun” writing at night, so that I can get my regular work done in the mornings and evenings.

I love writing soccer reports for fun – especially if my team have just won! Editing Wikipedia on my favourite subjects can be enjoyable too.

My blog is my fun place to write. It gets the juices flowing because I have no client pressure about what appears there.
