Can Anyone Make Money Blogging?

Over the years that I have been blogging, I’ve been approached several times by friends or relatives who want to learn to do what I do. They express their desire to make money online to either afford them the ability to leave their current job or to help supplement their existing income.

When it comes to making money from blogging, I personally believe anyone CAN, but very few DO.

Let me explain…

First and foremost, the critical ingredient to blogging success is having staying power. The ability to not allow defeat due to setbacks. A successful blogger must be willing to put their self out there and put in the hours upon hours of hard work that’s the proven foundation for successful blogs.

Recognize Possible Setbacks Before You Start:

  • Time – Very simply put – successful blogging takes a LOT of time. If you don’t have the time or are not willing to invest the time.
  • Giving Up – Many successful bloggers have designated 12 months the magic number for when they hit their stride and began to see a profit – not huge profits, just income from their efforts.
  • Lack of Writing Skills – Blogging is all about writing. If you don’t like to write – that could be a really big problem.
  • Take Readers for Granted – Blogging is about writing, but profit is about readers. Successful blogs have stated time and again they write for their readers and not for the money. Somehow it works and the money follows.
  • Lack of Focus – Color me guilty in this regard. Early on, I was so enthused about blogging, I wound up with 13 blogs on a variety of topics I found enjoyed. That didn’t last long. Once I reduced those topics down to a few I could easy maintain – success followed.

Certainly there are any number of setbacks that can and do occur and this list is far from complete.

That said, what are some of the setbacks you’ve experienced or witnessed in and around the blogosphere and what are some of the qualities you’ve witnessed in the most successful bloggers you know?

    Hi Gayla,

Im just starting out with my blog and the difficulties I am finding with it are just how to promote it! Im enthusiastic about the topics I am writing about, but Im having a hard time drawing in readers. I Tweet and use Facebook but the numbers are rather low.

I’ve heard that over time they do increase so I am going to stick with it!

    Thanks!

First of all, i want to say, “thank you, Gayla! ” for making such a nice post:)

@James, i think Blogging can be divided into 3 main parts-
      Writing, SEO, Promotion.
=> Most importantly, treat all these parts EQUALLY ( in terms of time, labor, attention( please add ‘love’ too;)

( my part: All the Best James with all your blogging efforts! )

There’s really good money to be made in blogging for others — I wrote about how I do it in this post: How I make $5,000 a month as a paid blogger.

Paid blogging is a great way to pay some bills while you work on making your own blog into a money machine…which takes some time no matter how brilliant you are.

James – I hoped over to take a look at your blog. You have a nice technique. One piece of advice I can give is once you’ve established your true interest in blogging on blogger and once you see if readers are going to take notice – I would urge you to consider moving to your own hosted website. There are far more blogs that have seen higher levels of success on their own blogs versus that of Blogger. When that day comes, let me know if you need any help – hosting, setup, whatever – I’d be happy to help.

Carol – great piece! I’ve taken the time to recommend it to my friends/followers too! Congrats on such a nice income – it’s so inspirational to read real stories with real results.

All good, sensible points. I started writing a blog because I like to write and because I wanted to learn about this new medium. In four years I have made about $.25 per day. If you don’t like to write you probably shouldn’t start.
BTW — I just found this blog and like it. Thanks.

    Hi Gayla,

Thank you for the reply and the kind words. I am very interested in promoting my blog and my copywriting business but, other than using Twitter and Facebook, Im out of ideas. If you have any thoughts on how I could promote both my blog and my business, then please get in touch with me!
