Before you get started, you should make sure you’re in decent financial shape, and capable of living through at least a few months of financial turmoil before you earn more consistent income.

You’ll need to evaluate your level of competition, how you’re going to make money, current demand, and how you’ll expand your business (if you plan to) in the future.
- Secure your initial assets. Next, you may need to invest in a better setup. If you’re working on freelance gigs, a small laptop is often enough, but if you’re going to work a full 40 hours a week (or more), you’ll want to invest in an office. That may mean finding office space in your city, or building out a home office with a desk, ergonomic furniture, and other accoutrements. If you need help getting started, you may need to take out a small business loan.

The best way to gain new clients is to earn more attention for yourself and build your reputation, which means working on your own blog, supporting your social media profiles, and getting involved with higher authorities in whatever niche you’re targeting. Prepare to spend at least a few hours every week promoting yourself—especially if your current client roster is limited.
