When a client (or any employer) puts out an ad looking for help, they are usually swamped with responses. It’s not uncommon for a single ad to generate 200 responses (or more). How do you stand out from the crowd of other people (in a positive way) who are trying to get the same freelance writing gig?
One thing that will set you apart from the rest of the pack is to follow the instructions in the ad to the letter. If the client is asking for a resume, send your most recent version. On the other hand, if applicants are being asked to send samples only, then skip the resume.
Some potential clients want the people answering their ad to answer a few questions or provide a brief statement about why they feel they are a good fit. In this case, resist the urge to write a 500 word essay on “Why I am the Perfect Writer for You.” Not only will the client not read it, but you will be pretty much guaranteed that you won’t get the gig.
Show, Don’t Tell
Don’t make the client guess why you would be the best choice for the gig; you need to show them. If you want to stand out from the crowd, give specific examples of why your skills, experience and interests make you a good fit for the client’s needs.
Ask for the Gig
Instead of trying to impress the client with how cool you are, why don’t you tell him or her that you got really excited about the gig when you read the ad and that you really want to work with them on this project? A client would much rather work with someone who is ready to roll up their sleeves and get to work than a person who doesn’t show the same level of enthusiasm.
